When you’re building a bed, the thing you probably concentrate on the most is the mattress. While the mattress should definitely number one on your priority list, you can’t forget about the sheets!

Aside from your mattress, the sheets and comforters are the components of your bed that have the most influence over its feel. They decide things like coolness, dryness, and texture. So luxury sheets can go a long way towards helping you create a bed with an amazing feel.

These sheets are primarily bamboo blended with cotton fibers. This offers greater durability and longevity. The fabric can stand up to wash after wash and not only resist pilling but get even softer than they were!

The bamboo also provides a cool and lightweight feel that breathes all night to keep away both moisture and heat buildup. And bamboo is one of the best materials on the market for fighting common allergens like dust mites and mold.

The weave also contributes to the clean and gentle feel and hypoallergenic properties. The 240 thread count also creates a looser weave that allows allergens to be washed out more easily, and it also helps increase the breathability of the sheet set.

The Amerisleep bamboo sheets come in two neutral colors that can suit most bedroom styles. Best of all, at $150 for a queen, they’re quite affordable for such luxurious and quality sheets.

Sheets Highlights
  • Organic cotton with long staple fibers
  • Silky soft feel from sateen weave
  • Available in three neutral colors
Recommended For
  • Hot sleepers
  • Sleepers with allergies or sensitive skin
  • Eco-conscious sleepers

Those who want a sateen weave and a low-maintenance, hypoallergenic sheet all at the same time should check out Saatva’s Organic Sateen Sheets. These sheets sport organic long staple cotton for the ultimate luxe feel and durability.

These sheets are made from 100 percent Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton. Organic cotton has to obey a rigorous set of rules surrounding its environmental impact and consumer safety. So you can rest assured that these sheets are some of the most eco-friendly and all-natural sheets around.

The sateen weave also leaves a luxurious shiny sheen on your sheets that will give your bed a luxury hotel look without the luxury hotel hassle. This is because long fiber cotton may have a luxurious feel and look, but it can also stand up to being washed in a machine. In fact, it’ll only grow softer after being washed.

The 300 thread count also allows for a looser weave. This translates into more moisture-wicking breathability and more efficient washing, as looser-woven fibers are better able to eject dirt and pollen in the wash than more tightly woven ones.

These Saatva sheets also feature extra deep pockets. So they fit mattresses up to 16 inches. And there’s even a split king option so that you don’t have to buy two sets of sheets if you have two separate mattresses in your king bed.

Pros

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Sateen weave for silky comfort
  • Fits mattress up to 16 inches tall

Cons

  • Limited color selection

Sheets Highlights
  • Bamboo fabric is gentle on skin
  • Fibers promote odor-free comfort
  • Airy weave and breathable materials
Recommended For
  • Hot sleepers
  • Sleepers with sensitive skin
  • Eco-conscious sleepers

Those looking for a more eco-conscious alternative to cotton that still feels amazing and doesn’t skimp on quality should check out the Bamboo Sheets by Nolah. These sheets offer a silky smooth and breathable feel.

The bamboo rayon in these Nolah sheets is certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This means they’re 100 percent free from harsh chemicals and safe for even the most sensitive skin. Bamboo fibers are also naturally moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic.

Even better, bamboo fibers are naturally antimicrobial. They create a hostile environment for all kinds of icky microbes, including dust mites and bacteria. So they actively fight the buildup of these nasty creatures to keep your sleep clean and odor-free.

The Nolah sheets are also easy to wash. Just toss them in the washing machine in cold water and tumble-dry them on low. No worries about hanging them to dry or messing up the fibers with a washer.

Eco-conscious sleepers will appreciate bamboo’s environmental friendliness too. Bamboo can grow in poor soil with little irrigation and fertilizer. It’s basically a weed that happens to make an excellent textile. So you won’t have to worry you’re sleeping on sheets made from wasted water and depleted topsoil.

Pros

  • Antimicrobial material for a clean feel
  • Eco-friendly bamboo fibers
  • Moisture- and heat-wicking fibers

Cons

  • Some may not like the manufacturing process to create bamboo fibers

  • Soft and cool like silk, cotton, or linen
Recommended For
  • Eco-conscious sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Sleepers seeking a soft set of sheets

If Tencel sheets are your thing, and you also want the softest sheets around, take a look at the Helix White Ultra-Soft Sheet Set. These Helix sheets feature soft and breathable Tencel fabric to give you the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had.

Tencel is made from Eucalyptus tree pulp. So it’s cool, crisp, and breathable all at once. Helix also puts their sheets through a softening process to make the end product softer than silk, cooler than linen, and more sweat-wicking than cotton. That means you can expect the ultimate comfort from your Helix sheets.

Not only is Tencel comfortable, but it’s also environmentally friendly. Eucalyptus trees are some of the most sustainable commercially grown trees in the world. They don’t need much fertilizer. They’re incredibly drought resistant, thanks to their native Australian roots. And they can grow back from their roots without being replanted after harvesting.

All this means that these trees don’t have as negative an impact on the environment as many other natural fibers, especially cotton and silk.

Tencel isn’t just eco-friendly. It’s also quite durable. You can machine wash and tumble dry your Helix sheets without worrying about pilling or thinning. And Tencel is also less prone to shrinkage or wrinkles than other fabrics.

Another great thing about these Helix sheets is they come with a 100-night sleep trial and a three-year limited warranty. So you don’t have to worry about not being able to return them if you hate them – but we’re certain you won’t!

Why Choose Luxury Sheets?

Of course, the component of your bed that most dictates how it feels is the mattress. Your mattress decides how responsive, cool, supportive, and pressure-relieving your bed is. However, aside from having the best mattress, the component of your bed that influences its feel the most is your sheet set.

The best bed sheets work with your mattress to create the right feel for your bed, increasing breathability and improving temperature control. Sheets also help create the plush sleep surface that helps you relax and drift off.

This is the main reason why luxury sheets are a great investment. They’re made to a higher standard than regular sheets, so they create a much better sleep experience. They’re more breathable, creating cooling sheets for better temperature control. They’re made of higher-quality fabric for greater durability. And they’re just more enjoyable to sleep on than sheets that don’t feel all that great.

How to Find the Best Luxury Sheets

Finding the best luxury sheets for you can feel confusing because there are so many different types of bed sheets to choose from. Should you get percale or sateen weave? Cotton or silk? A high or low thread count? There’s no real right or wrong answer to these questions – just the right answer for you.

Material

There are lots of materials for you to choose from when it comes to luxury sheets. While natural fibers have a stellar reputation, techniques for creating synthetic fibers have improved to the point that these fabrics are worth considering when you’re deciding on which textile is best.

Bamboo

Bamboo viscose fabric is made by pulverizing bamboo fibers into a pulp and then spinning that pulp into fibers. This process creates a temperature-regulating, hypoallergenic, and fantastically soft sheet, perfect if you want something comfortable to pair with a mattress for allergies.

Bamboo sheets have a cool, crisp feel that’s similar to cotton – but a lot more sustainable. Bamboo harvesting takes much less water and doesn’t deplete soil like cotton. On the flip side, some sleepers may not appreciate some of the harsh chemicals that go into the process of creating bamboo pulp.

Cotton

Cotton sheets are among the most popular and widely available sheets on the market. However, when it comes to luxury sheets, you’ll want to look for long staple cotton. Long staple or long fiber cotton has fibers that are at least 1.25 inches. Long fiber cotton goes by different names, like Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton, or sea island cotton.

Long staple cotton provides much more durability and softness than short staple cotton. The long fibers are less prone to pilling, and they get softer and softer over time without thinning out. Many percale cotton sheets rely on long staple fibers to create a durable yet delicate feel.

For an even more luxurious feel, go for extra-long staple cotton. Egyptian cotton sheets are one example of sheets with extra-long staple cotton fibers, which explains their reputation for durable luxury.

We also suggest shopping for organic cotton sheets if you have sensitive skin or allergies. As a bonus, organic cotton is often sturdier than non-organic cotton.

Linen

Linen is made from flax plant fibers. These fibers are thicker than cotton fibers, so linen sheets are more durable than cotton sheets. They also have a highly breathable and moisture-wicking feel that is perfect for hot sleepers.

Linen is also more eco-friendly than cotton and bamboo alike because flax is a more sustainable crop than cotton, and linen fibers don’t require the energy-intensive manufacturing process of bamboo fibers. The only real issue with linen is that it wrinkles easily, and it may feel overly stiff before you wash it a few times.

Microfiber

Microfiber is amongst the most lightweight synthetic fabrics. It can be made of viscose, polyester, or nylon, but it’s always woven very tightly to create a feel that’s similar to cotton but more affordable.

Microfiber sheets are very low maintenance. They resist stains and wrinkles. They’re machine washable. And they are more affordable than other sheet sets without sacrificing the luxury feel. The main downside to microfiber sheets is they’re less breathable and may retain more heat – a common issue with synthetic fibers.

If you want to compare microfiber with similarly low-maintenance cotton, we suggest our Cotton vs Microfiber Sheets guide.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fabric woven from petroleum products. Polyester is best known for its frequent presence in sweat-wicking athletic gear. Thanks to its durability and stain-resistance, polyester is another fabric that makes a practical sheet with a luxurious feel.

The biggest con of polyester is its lack of breathability. Polyester can wick away sweat, but it cannot circulate air as natural fibers can. This may lead to overheating. Polyester may also feel rougher than cotton and other natural fabrics.

Rayon

Rayon is a kind-of-sort-of natural fabric. Like bamboo viscose, rayon is made from pulverized wood pulp that is spun into a fabric. Rayon can be made from bamboo, eucalyptus, and any other source of cellulose.

Rayon is a natural fabric in the sense that it comes from plant-based sources. However, it can also be considered a synthetic fabric because of the processes that go into pulverizing and creating threads from it. All this means rayon offers a crisp, cool feel, like a natural fiber. But it’s harder to launder and dry, like a synthetic fiber.

Silk

Silk is made from the cocoon fibers produced by the silkmoth caterpillar. The fibers are boiled and spun to create one of the smoothest and shiniest fabrics on the market. Silk is so soft and luxurious it even has its own adjective that means just that: silky!

Silk is ultra smooth and hypoallergenic. So it doesn’t just boast a fantastically soft feel. It also is great for those with sensitive skin. The main issue you should be aware of is silk’s maintenance issues. It’s so delicate that machine washing it is iffy – and most of the time, you cannot tumble dry silk. This can make washing your sheets once a week inconvenient.

Wool

Wool fibers come from sheep. Sheep are shorn in the spring, and their wool is washed and spun into fibers. Contrary to popular belief, wool is not hot. Wool evolved to keep sheep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This means it’s actually temperature-neutral and great for those who go to sleep too warm but then wake up too cold, one reason that wool blankets are so popular.

Wool is also easy to wash and maintain. The main issue with wool sheets is they may not feel as soft and luxurious as other natural fibers.

Thread Count

Thread count used to be the gold standard for determining sheet quality, but this is not really the case anymore. It’s true that a too-low thread count can create a low-quality fabric with substandard durability and a rough feel.

On the other hand, a too-high thread count can create an overly tight weave that decreases breathability and leads to inferior temperature control. An overly high thread count also provides a convenient excuse for manufacturers to overcharge.

With all that in mind, we recommend a thread count of 300 to 600. 500 to 600 threads will offer a luxurious feel without the issues inherent to higher thread count sheets. If you want an extra-luxe feel, a thread count of up to 800 can offer it, but beware of thread counts above 1,000. These are best to avoid.

Weave

There are two luxury weaves that can give your bed an amazing feel night after night: percale and sateen.

Percale

Percale weave is a fabric with a simple under-over pattern. The threads crisscross one another to create a fabric that’s smooth and durable. Percale woven sheets have a matte look and a cool, crisp feel.

While percale sheets are often synonymous with cotton sheets, there are other fibers that can be sold in a percale weave.

Sateen

Sateen weave is a bit more complex. It uses one thread under and three to four threads over. This creates a heavier sheet with a silky feel and a shiny finish. Sateen weave creates the quintessential “luxury sheet.” But it comes at the cost of decreased durability and increased heat retention.

Ease of Care

It’s important to remember when you’re shopping for luxury sheets that you’re still going to have to wash your sheets once a week. If handwashing and line-drying sheets won’t be an issue for you, then skip on ahead.

If, however, you don’t have the time or energy for all that, you may want to stick with sheets that are easy to care for and have a luxurious feel all at once. Long fiber cotton, linen, and bamboo all fit this bill.

Mattress Fit

Luxury sheets aren’t all that luxurious if they keep slipping off, so you’ll want to ensure your sheets have a snug and stable fit. The best way to do this is to find sheets with deep pockets and an elastic band that surrounds the entire perimeter of the fitted sheet. A combination of deep pockets and elastic corner bands will also do the trick.

Even with deep pockets, you may need to rely on some of our tips and tricks to keep your sheets on an adjustable bed.

Other Luxury Considerations

Sheets are a key part of upgrading your bed, as they tend to be the first thing you notice when you lie down at night. However, it’s not all you need to consider if you want the most luxurious sleep experience.

Naturally, having the most comfortable mattress is a necessary part of sleeping well at night. What is most comfortable for you is a matter of personal preference and will largely depend on your favorite sleep position and body type.

Do you need a luxury mattress to experience luxurious sleep? Not necessarily, as even a well-made budget mattress can significantly boost your comfort. But if you want a bed with special features and high-quality materials, a luxury mattress might be the way to go.

You may even want to replicate the feel of a vacation get-a-way with one of the top hotel mattresses. White sheets and fluffy pillows can complete the experience, creating all that you need for a stay-at-home vacation.

If you don’t want to invest just yet into a new mattress but also want to significantly improve its surface feel, we suggest considering a mattress topper. Toppers add a few inches of material to create a firmer, softer, or cooler feel, and many serve to address a specific issue:

Are you looking at luxury sheets to find the best sheets for hot sleepers? Then we suggest pairing your chosen sheet set with other cooling bedding:

Saving on Luxury Sheets

If the high prices are scaring you off from a set of luxury sheets, we suggest keeping an eye out for the big mattress sales that re-occur throughout the year. While mattresses tend to be the focus of these sales, other bedding items also go on sale, including luxury sheets.

FAQs

What are the best high-end sheets for hot sleepers?

If you sleep hot, you’ll need a moisture-wicking and breathable fabric. Natural fabrics usually fit this bill the best. Cotton is among the best materials for hot sleepers. It’s breathable, it wicks away sweat, and it won’t retain heat. Those who sleep hot should check out cotton first and foremost.

If you tend to sleep both hot and cold – i.e., going to sleep feeling too hot but then waking in the middle of the night too cold – think about more temperature-neutral wool. Wool has naturally evolved to keep sheep warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

This breathable fabric can help keep you from overheating while simultaneously preventing you from becoming too chilly once your body temperature naturally falls during sleep.

Can I machine-wash luxury sheets?

That depends. Some luxury materials can be machine washed. Long-fiber cotton, in particular, is a durable textile that can stand up to being washed in the washing machine and even dried in the dryer. In fact, cotton usually only gets softer with washes.

On the flip side, other materials might not be so machine washable. You’ll want to be extremely careful with delicate fabrics like silk and synthetic fabrics, some of which cannot handle being washed in a machine with an agitator – or even in a machine at all.

No matter what kind of sheets you buy, the best way to ensure you’re caring for them appropriately is to check their care tag and follow the instructions on the sheets. The care tag usually comes on the bottom corner of the flat sheet. Make sure to read the instructions thoroughly, and don’t disregard any part of them. Doing so could mean ruining your sheets.

Are high-end sheets easy to maintain?

Sheet maintenance depends on sheet material. Typically, natural fibers are more durable and can stand up to machine washing and tumble drying better than synthetic materials. Cotton and wool sheets are both quite easy to maintain.

Even luxury sheets made of these fabrics are typically machine washable. Though it’s a natural fiber, delicate silk is a little trickier. You technically can machine-wash silk, but you’ll need to pay close attention to the care instructions. And you may have to hang silk sheets to dry.

Synthetic fabrics are usually tougher to maintain than natural fabrics. You can machine wash many synthetics – like microfiber and polyester – but not always. Tumble drying may also damage these fabrics. As with all textiles, read and follow the care instructions for maximum longevity.

How much do luxury sheets cost?

That depends on many factors, from material to thread count to size. Generally, the higher the thread count, the more expensive the sheet. Of course, larger sizes are more expensive as well.

Certain materials are also more expensive than others. Long fiber cotton, like sea island cotton and Egyptian cotton, can be quite pricey, as can silk and any organic textile. When it comes to luxury sheets, expect to pay between $200 and $800. Some luxury sheets can even cost over $1,000.

What are the best luxury sheets for sleepers with allergies?

When you have allergies, you’ll want to think about more than just fabric. Of course, hypoallergenic fabrics like cotton and linen are vital, but you’ll also need to think about thread count and weave.

Generally, looser weaves and lower to medium thread counts are better for people with allergies. This is because looser woven fabrics are more breathable and retain less moisture, meaning they’re more inhospitable to allergens like dust mites and mold.

It’s also easier to wash allergens like pollen and dust out of a looser weave. So those who have allergies should take note.

Bottom Line

Luxury sheets can take your bed’s feel from alright to amazing in minutes – and they cost a whole lot less than choosing a mattress would, to boot!

Just remember that when you’re shopping for sheets, natural fabrics are often the best of the best, a higher thread count doesn’t always equal a better sheet, and lower-maintenance fabrics are usually better because you still have to wash your luxury sheets once a week.
