Hi, I’m Christina with Sleep Junkie, a certified sleep science coach via the Spencer Institute. I’m also a mother of two, and I’m very passionate about holistic health and great sleep. Today, I’ll be providing an unbiased review of the Nolah Natural 11″ mattress. Nolah sent me this mattress to try out and share my honest feedback.

The Nolah Natural arrived at my doorstep in a standard boxed mattress packaging. As with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, it was heavy, so having an extra set of hands to move it to the bedroom is recommended.

Once I had this mattress in a box unwrapped and positioned on my bed frame and cut open the plastic, the mattress expanded quickly, reaching its full 11″ height almost instantly. One thing I always look for is any off-gassing smell when opening a new mattress, as I don’t want to be inhaling those fumes. I’m happy to report that the Nolah Natural had no discernible odor at all.

With the mattress fully set up, I was excited to experience it firsthand and share my findings with you. Let’s dive into the details! You can watch my video above or keep reading on for my full thoughts!

Our Review Process: Each mattress we review undergoes a rigorous evaluation process. We assess comfort, support, cooling, and durability through both subjective experiences and objective tests.

Criteria include pressure relief, spine alignment, mattress responsiveness, motion transfer, edge support, and temperature regulation. This comprehensive approach ensures our reviews are thorough and unbiased.

Mattress Layers, Materials, and Construction

Delving into the Nolah Natural 11, I was struck by its impeccable construction and premium materials. This intelligently engineered 11-inch hybrid boasts Talalay latex layers, paired with a zoned pocketed coil system, ensuring tailored comfort and durable support.

Starting at the base, the Nolah Natural 11 features an organic wool and cotton foundation layer. This serves as the stabilizing support layer beneath the coils, contributing to the mattress’s overall durability.

Next is the 8″ coil layer, which Nolah calls the HD Max Tri-Zone support coils. These are individually wrapped steel coils with three targeted support zones and reinforced edge support. As you’ll see in my edge support testing later, I can confirm that this coil layer provides excellent reinforcement along the perimeter.

Moving up, we have the 1″ Talalay latex support layer. This acts as a transition between the latex comfort layer above and the coils underneath, enhancing the mattress’s responsiveness – something I validated during my response time tests.

Nearing the top is the 2″ Talalay latex comfort layer. This plush, pressure-relieving material offers gentle contouring while maintaining the responsive bounce that latex is known for.

Finally, topping it all off is the wool fire barrier and GOTS certified organic cotton cover. The wool layer serves as a natural fire barrier while adding cooling and breathable cushioning. The organic cotton cover is also GOTS certified, providing an ultra-soft and highly breathable protective fabric.

Sleeping Positions

The Nolah Natural mattress is a medium firmness, and I found it to be comfortable across all sleeping positions, making it an excellent choice for combination sleepers who shift positions throughout the night.

It’s possible that strict back and stomach sleepers may prefer a slightly firmer mattress. However, in my opinion, the firmness level is still adequate for these positions. I wouldn’t consider the Nolah Natural to be soft or plush. In this regard, it serves quite well as a mattress for combination sleeping.

However, when lying on my side, I noticed no hip pain at all. I would consider this mattress soft enough for side sleepers, especially if they don’t want an ultra-plush feel. As someone who primarily sleeps on my side, I can attest that I slept comfortably when testing this mattress.

Response Time

Response time is an important factor because you want your mattress to bounce back quickly, never leaving you feeling stuck or restricted in bed. A necessary feature for combination sleepers.

Swift response time is also a necessity if you’re looking for a mattress for pressure points. If a mattress is too slow to conform and adapt, it can lead to pressure building up in areas of the body. Given the bouncy nature of latex, I anticipated that the Nolah Natural would perform well in this area.

To test this, I used 10-pound weights and observed how quickly they bounced back after applying pressure. As expected, the weights rebounded immediately, proving the high responsiveness of this mattress.

I would give the Nolah Natural a perfect 10 out of 10 score for response time. Thanks to the latex layers, you’ll never feel trapped or restricted while sleeping on this mattress.

Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Motion transfer refers to how much you can feel your partner’s movements in bed, which is especially important for couples to consider. You want a mattress with motion isolation, one that traps movements so well so that your sleep isn’t disturbed by your partner tossing and turning.

To test this, I tossed and turned on the mattress while observing how much the weights moved. While I did see them move slightly – likely due to the bounciness of the latex – my previous tests showed that I didn’t feel my partner’s movements too much when we shared the bed. Based on this, I would give the Nolah Natural a 9 out of 10 for motion transfer, establishing an ideal mattress for couples.

Edge support is another crucial factor, referring to how well-defined the edge of the mattress is and whether you feel like you’re going to roll off when sitting on the perimeter. As I sat on the edge and scooted closer, at no point did I feel like I was going to fall off. There’s a very distinct edge, likely thanks to the reinforced coil system.

However, I did notice some sinking when sitting on the edge. It’s a bit of a trade-off – while there’s a clear edge, you do compress the materials more when putting weight directly on the perimeter. Considering these factors, I would give the Nolah Natural a 9 out of 10 for edge support.

Cooling and Breathability

The Nolah Natural performs exceptionally well in terms of cooling and breathability, earning a 9 out of 10 score from me. While the mattress cover doesn’t feel as chilled as some other mattresses I’ve tested, I’m perfectly fine with that trade-off because of the natural materials used in this mattress’s construction.

The cotton cover, latex layers, and wool barrier all work together to provide natural temperature regulation. Cotton is an inherently breathable material that wicks away moisture to prevent heat buildup.

The latex foam is also quite breathable, punctured with small holes to allow airflow in this cooling mattress. And wool has thermoregulating properties, helping to disperse body heat evenly across the sleep surface.

When I slept on the Nolah Natural, I never once felt overheated or woke up feeling excessively warm. The mattress did an excellent job of maintaining a comfortable, neutral temperature for sleep throughout the night.

This is a major advantage over some memory foam mattresses, which can trap body heat. For hot sleepers or those living in warmer climates, the Nolah Natural’s use of natural cooling materials is a significant benefit. You can sleep soundly knowing this mattress is designed to dissipate heat and provide a refreshingly cool sleeping experience.

However, I will note that for sleepers who find that top-of-the-line coolness is needed to sleep well, the Nolah Evolution 15 scored a perfect 10 out of 10 for coolness.

Durability and Longevity

The Nolah Natural mattress instills confidence in its long-term durability and longevity through its high-quality materials, robust construction, and Nolah’s limited lifetime warranty. All of these factors combined ensure this is a durable mattress that should serve sleepers well for many years to come.

Starting with the materials, the Nolah Natural utilizes premium components like natural Talalay latex, organic cotton and wool, and recycled steel coils. Latex is known for its resilience and ability to maintain its shape and responsiveness over time.

The organic cotton and wool fibers are also extremely durable natural textiles, untreated by chemicals that can compromise their longevity. And the coil system provides ample support to prevent sagging and body impressions from developing.

The mattress’s solid construction is also a key factor in its longevity. The coils are individually wrapped to improve motion isolation and extend the life of the coil unit, ensuring a mattress that won’t sag. The layers are securely stitched together to prevent shifting or bunching. And the high-density foams won’t easily deteriorate or develop permanent body indentations.

Finally, Nolah backs up the quality of their mattress with a limited lifetime warranty. This gives owners peace of mind that any defects in materials or workmanship will be covered by the company. While the fine print varies the coverage over the course of ownership, a lifetime warranty is still impressive in the mattress industry.

Potential Drawbacks

While the Nolah Natural mattress impressed me in many areas, there are a few possible downsides to consider for certain sleepers. Rarely is a mattress something that can suit nearly everyone, and the Nolah Natural 11’s specialization can be both a draw and a drawback.

Mattress Firmness

The first is the mattress firmness level. As a medium firm mattress, the Nolah Natural may not suit those looking for an ultra-plush, soft sleeping surface. Side sleepers who prefer to sink deeply into their mattress for enhanced pressure relief may find this feels too firm initially.

On the flip side, strict back and stomach sleepers accustomed to extra firm mattresses may also feel this is too soft for their preferences. The medium firmness makes it versatile for most, but not ideal for sleepers at either firmness extreme.

Couples are likely to appreciate the buoyant medium feel, but it’s still not for all partners. For example, some prefer a dual firmness option like what the Nest Bedding Sparrow offers in its king sizes.

Latex Sensitivities

Another potential drawback is the use of latex in the comfort layers. While latex provides excellent responsiveness and breathability, it is made from rubber tree sap, which some people may be allergic to 1 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source .

Those with latex sensitivities will want to avoid this mattress entirely. Additionally, customers specifically seeking an all-foam mattress will be disappointed, as the Nolah Natural utilizes both latex foam and coils in its construction. The responsive yet gently cradling feel of latex won’t appeal to everyone, too.

Mattress Coolness

Moreover, while the Natural 11 excels at cooling, it’s still falls slightly short of providing the ultimate in cooling experiences. For those who need a mattress that has a pleasantly chilled surface to sleep well, I would suggest the Nolah Evolution 15 or another mattress that I have awarded a perfect 10/10 for coolness to, such as:

Mattress Profile

Finally, the 11-inch profile height of the Nolah Natural is a bit shorter than other luxury mattresses with a hybrid design, which often measure 12 to 14 inches tall.

While 11 inches is still a substantial height, some may wish the Nolah Natural had a few more inches in its build. That, for them, this mattress doesn’t offer quite enough material between them and their bed’s foundation and bedroom floor when it coms to a comfy bed height.

Trial Period, Warranty, Pricing, and Sizes

Nolah offers a 120-night trial period for their mattresses, giving you ample time to try it out. However, they also provide the option to waive this trial period in exchange for a $100 discount on your mattress purchase. This can be helpful if you need an affordable mattress.

While Nolah advertises a limited lifetime warranty, it’s essential to read the fine print. For example, from years 11 to 25, the original owner would pay a pro-rated replacement charge if the mattress is deemed defective.

Nolah also has a “Don’t Lose Sleep” option that streamlines the warranty process after the first three years of ownership, allowing you to retain your original mattress and receive a replacement at a discounted rate based on the number of years you’ve owned it.

When compared to other 11-inch hybrid mattresses on the market, the Nolah Natural provides excellent value for the quality of materials and construction. While it may seem pricier than some options, I find the price point to be fair given the premium components used.

The Nolah Natural is available in all standard mattress sizes, from twin to California king, including a split California king option. Nolah lists the exact dimensions for each size on their website, making it easy to determine which option will best fit your space.

Customer Reviews

Recognizing that personal preferences vary, I always aim to complement my mattress assessments with customer feedback. According to the reviews I read, users appreciated the Nolah Natural 11 for its pressure relief, buoyancy coupled with minimal motion transfer, and a stay-cool feel.

The Nolah Natural 11 mattress overall receives an impressive rating of 4.8 out of 5.0. Here is just a small sample of the satisfied reviews that I read:

  • Thomas Myette, a 59-year-old, experienced significant improvement in his sleep quality with this Nolah mattress. Previously waking up with back pain and fatigue and stating it was like waking up after a fight, he noted waking up feeling refreshed and without any bags under his eyes on the Natural 11.
  • Kaitlin McConnell is a side sleeper who loved the Nolah Natural mattress. She chose it after discovering her previous mattress contained fiberglass. She appreciates the safety and organic nature of the Nolah Natural, finding it comfortable with the perfect balance of softness and support. Overall, she is very satisfied with her purchase.
  • Claire Sullivan and her boyfriend purchased the mattress at a 30% discount during Black Friday and are both satisfied with it. Despite Claire’s minor back issues, the mattress hasn’t caused any discomfort. Compared to her previous organic mattress, Claire finds this one slightly less firm but more comfortable and equally supportive.

However, it’s not a universally beloved mattress. One 3-star review from Irena Saundeen called the Nolah Natural an improvement over her last mattress. However, she noted it took 8 months to stop feeling so firm to her, a side and stomach sleeper. She also found that rather than staying cool, the mattress seemed to have the ongoing issue of retaining heat.

Environmental Impact

Today’s consumers are increasingly mindful of their environmental impact, even when it comes to purchasing a new mattress. However, opting for an eco-friendly mattress doesn’t necessarily mean choosing an all-natural or organic mattress.

The cotton and wool used in this mattress are GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard), and their latex is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, indicating it meets strict international standards for health and safety. And latex foam is already more environmentally friendly than memory foam, as it’s made with harvested rubber tree sap rather than synthetic chemicals.

By choosing the Nolah Natural 11″, eco-conscious consumers can sleep soundly knowing they’ve selected a mattress that is gentle on the planet. Its use of renewable, biodegradable materials and sustainable sourcing practices make it an excellent choice for those seeking an environmentally-friendly sleep solution without sacrificing comfort or quality.

Furthermore, all Nolah models are mattresses without fiberglass, with the Nolah Natural 11 relying entirely on its organic wool layer. However, that every memory foam model they offer is also fiberglass-free shows Nolah’s commitment to their customer’s health and safety.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure your Nolah Natural mattress lasts as long as possible, following proper maintenance and care practices is essential. Nolah doesn’t explicitly state whether a waterproof mattress protector is required, but using one is generally a good practice to protect your investment. For me, I never sleep on a new mattress until I’ve covered it with a protector.

For mattress cleaning, Nolah recommends spot cleaning the mattress with gentle soap and warm water as needed. Do not soak the mattress and be sure it’s completely dry before you replace the protector and bedding.

It’s important to never flip the Nolah Natural – the cotton cover should always face up. While Nolah doesn’t specify their stance on rotation, it’s a common recommendation to rotate your mattress periodically to promote even wear. I would do about every six months to prevent permanent impressions and indentations from developing.

Regular hygiene practices, like washing your bedding and linens, will also help extend the life of your Nolah Natural mattress for decades to come. This measure keeps allergens and pest attractants from lingering on the mattress, plus it gives you refreshingly clean bedding to relax with at night. As I rule, I wash my sheets and such once a week.

Final Verdict

In closing, I would give the Nolah Natural Hybrid Mattress an overall score of 9 out of 10, keeping in mind that you’ll need to be comfortable with the bouncy nature of latex and some sinking when sitting on the edge.

Despite those minor drawbacks, the Nolah Natural excels in crucial areas like responsiveness, motion isolation, edge support, cooling, and overall comfort across sleeping positions. The high-quality natural materials and construction give me confidence in the mattress’s durability and longevity.

If you’re looking for a supportive yet pressure-relieving sleep surface that responds quickly to your movements and doesn’t sleep hot, the Nolah Natural is an excellent choice to consider. Its combination of latex, coils, and natural fiber layers creates a well-rounded sleeping experience that I believe many people will find comfortable and restorative.

Thank you for joining me on this comprehensive review of the Nolah Natural mattress. I hope this in-depth look has provided valuable insights to help you make an informed decision about your sleep health needs. Remember, investing in a high-quality mattress is an investment in your overall well-being!
