The Amerisleep AS3 tops today’s list for its versatility, breathability, and most importantly—durability! The AS3’s comfort layer is made from Amerisleep’s proprietary Bio-Pur® memory foam. Unlike standard memory foam that’s made entirely out of petroleum, Bio-Pur® is castor oil-based. Not only does this make the foam more durable, but it’s more responsive and cool as well.

Next is a layer of Affinity foam with HIVE®, a support technology split into five zones. The layer is firm around your head, back, and legs, and then soft around your hips and shoulders. This design optimizes spinal support and pressure relief so you sleep soundly all night long.

With the AS3, you have the option of a foam or hybrid model. The foam AS3 model features a Bio-Core® foam base. It’s firm, sturdy, and reliable, ensuring the bed won’t sag after only a few years. The AS3 Hybrid model contains pocketed coils for added bounce and breathability.

The Zoma Mattress is a popular choice amongst hot sleepers. With its gel foam and moisture-absorbing cover, you won’t overheat at night. Beyond that, the Zoma Mattress is built to improve your sleep and pain simultaneously.

At 12 inches thick, the Zoma Mattress has a medium feel. The cover is made with AirCloth fabric, a stretchy and durable polyester. It draws body heat and sweat away from your body to help you sleep comfortably.

The Zoma Mattress’s comfort layer is gel foam with Triangulex™ technology. The gel-infused foam prevents the bed from overheating. Meanwhile, Triangulex™ is Zoma’s zoned support system. It’s split into three zones around your hips, shoulders, and back to evenly distribute your body weight.

Although the gel foam is responsive on its own, Zoma amps up the bed’s buoyancy with its Reactiv™ transition layer. Reactiv™ lifts your body to keep you aligned, making it easy to sleep comfortably.

The base of the Zoma Mattress is made from Support+ foam. It promotes a healthy spine while ensuring your bed lasts for years!

The Zoma Mattress includes a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

Recommended For
  • Side sleepers
  • Plus-sized sleepers
  • People with joint pain

Side sleepers often deal with hip and shoulder pain which makes it difficult to stay comfortable and sleep well. The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is a soft mattress, but despite its cushioning, it’s durable and supportive. At 14 inches thick, we recommend the AS5 Hybrid to side sleepers, joint pain sufferers, and plus-sized people!

The AS5 Hybrid contains Bio-Pur® memory foam, like most other Amerisleep mattresses. But what makes the AS5 Hybrid unique is its Active Flex transition layer. Similar to latex, Active Flex is springy and lifts your body, evenly distributing your body weight to prevent any pain. Also, it provides extra support to heavier people who often can’t use soft beds comfortably.

Next is a layer of pocketed coils, individually-wrapped steel springs arranged in a single layer. Pocketed coils are more durable than other types of springs in mattresses, ensuring the mattress won’t sag easily. Neither side of this layer are extra-firm coils to prevent the edges from sagging or becoming unsupportive.

The bottom of the AS5 Hybrid is a thin base foam to protect the coils and reduce sagging or lumps.

The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid includes a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Chronic pain is all too common, but the right mattress can soothe aches and makes it easier to sleep at night. The Zoma Hybrid is one of our favorites for people suffering chronic pain. Originally built for athletes, the Zoma Hybrid fosters deep sleep while boosting muscle recovery and improving physical performance.

While the Zoma Hybrid and flagship Zoma Mattress have similarities, they’re unique and have different benefits. Unlike the Zoma Mattress, the Zoma Hybrid doesn’t contain Support+ foam or Triangulex™ technology. Instead, it contains pocketed coils and a thin layer of base foam.

The pocketed coils inside the Zoma Hybrid add an extra bounce to the bed, ensuring you don’t sink or feel “stuck” in bed. Sinking can also worsen pain and stiffness, so it’s important to avoid it. With that, the coils support a healthy spine, relieving back and neck pain.

The Zoma Hybrid’s foam base absorbs shock from the pocketed coils, preventing them from wearing down too quickly. This means you can use your bed comfortably for longer to better minimize chronic pain!

You receive a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty with the Zoma Hybrid.

The Vaya Hybrid stands out for its affordability and how long it lasts. Most hybrid mattresses are expensive and deteriorate quickly, but you won’t have to worry about that with the Vaya Hybrid. It’s 12 inches thick and has a medium feel. This way, as many people as possible can enjoy the Vaya Hybrid.

The Vaya Hybrid contains Vaya Comfort Foam, like the original Vaya Mattress. But rather than the Vaya Base Foam foundation, the Vaya Hybrid contains pocketed coils. Each spring is wrapped in fabric to reduce squeaks, scrapes, and motion transfer. Pocketed coils add lots of bounce and increase airflow throughout the bed.

Beneath the coils is a thin foam base that helps your mattress last without sagging.

With the Vaya Hybrid, you get a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

Latex mattresses are one of the most durable mattresses out there, but with so many options, it’s hard to know what’s best. The Amerisleep Organica is a reliable, high-quality mattress great for all types of people!

The Amerisleep Organica is 13 inches thick and features a GOTS organic certified cotton cover. Not only is cotton a breathable and soft material, but it’s long-lasting as well. Amerisleep adds needle-tufted rosettes to the organic cotton cover to secure the mattress layers and further help your bed last.

Under the cover is fire-safe batting made from New Zealand Joma Wool®. It adds a little extra cushioning to the bed while absorbing heat and moisture.

The Organica’s Talalay latex comfort layer is responsive and cool to the touch. It relieves pressure without causing you to sink or feel unsupported.

Rather than making a mattress entirely out of foam, Amerisleep adds pocketed coils to the Organica for extra support and ventilation. Like other Amerisleep mattresses, the coils are reinforced on the sides of the bed to minimize sags.

At the base of the Organica is firm Dunlop latex. It’s durable and sturdy, making it the perfect foundation for this latex hybrid bed.

How Long Do Different Types of Mattresses Last?

Mattress type makes one of the biggest impacts on how long your bed will last. Not only that, the type of mattress you have affects your bed’s feel and price!

Memory Foam

Approximate lifespan: 8 to 10 years

Memory foam mattresses are a popular choice known for their “hug-like” pressure relief. They conform to your body and isolate motion without feeling overly soft or unsupportive. However, memory foam mattresses aren’t made entirely of memory foam. They typically have high-density polyurethane foam (polyfoam) bases because the durability makes for a great foundation.

We recommend looking for options including gel memory foam, plant-based memory foam, or perforated memory foam for enhanced breathability. All of these design choices can be used to create some of the most comfortable mattresses with memory foam cushion.

Shoppers interested in this type of mattress may want to consult our memory foam mattress buying guide.

Latex

Approximate lifespan: 12 to 15 years

Natural latex mattresses are made from the sap of rubber trees and are known for their buoyant, cooling feel. Compared to memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses aren’t as cushiony and don’t have a “hug-like” feel, though many people prefer this.

Not only is latex foam sustainable, but it’s one of the most durable types of mattresses out there. They usually start at about $1000, with many mattresses costing under $2000, and last 12 to 15 years on average.

Our latex mattress buying guide discusses all the must-know aspects of this type.

Innerspring

Approximate lifespan: 5 to 7 years

Innerspring mattresses have been around forever, but they don’t last forever. With steel springs and lightweight pillow tops, innerspring beds are known for their great spinal support and breathability. The pillow tops aren’t quite as cushiony as foam mattresses, but they still provide light pressure relief to sleepers.

While innerspring beds are cheap, they’re not always durable. The average innerspring bed has a 5 to 7-year lifespan before the springs go weak and the pillow tops become lumpy and flat.

Read our innerspring mattress buying guide for more information on this type.

Hybrid

Approximate lifespan: 5 to 7 years

Hybrid mattresses are an upgraded, modern version of innerspring mattresses. What makes the two different is that hybrid mattresses must contain pocketed coils and a foam comfort layer thicker than 2 to 3 inches. This results in a pressure-relieving and cushiony, yet supportive and springy mattress.

Due to their complex design, hybrid mattresses are on the spendier side, often starting at about $1000. But despite their price, they only last about 5 to 7 years, which is the same lifespan as a standard innerspring bed.

See our hybrid mattress buying guide for more information.

FAQs

How do you know if my mattress is worn out?

There are obvious signs to look for if your mattress is aging and due for replacement.

Look out for these signs in your bed:

  • Sags, lumps, and soft spots
  • A large indent in the center of the bed
  • Discoloration and yellowing
  • Odors

If you don’t notice any physical damage, consider if you have these issues:

  • You struggle to get comfortable at night
  • It’s difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep
  • You feel groggy and fatigued in the mornings
  • You wake up feeling sore, stiff, or achy
  • You sleep better on different beds

What happens if I don’t replace my mattress?

If your old mattress is lumpy, sagging, and has a large indentation in the center, it won’t be comfortable. Old mattresses won’t properly support your spine or cushion your body, leading to stiffness, soreness, and other pain. Feeling uncomfortable and sore makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, leaving you fatigued during the day.

Can a mattress last 20 years?

While a mattress can last 20 years, it’s very rare. The most durable mattress type, latex, is only estimated to last 15 years at most. While mattresses won’t magically combust after 10 or 15 years, they often become lumpy and saggy beyond repair, leading to pain and discomfort.

Some extremely high-end beds (think $10,000 or more) claim their beds last longer than 20 years. But realistically, it’s not worth spending thousands of dollars for a bed to last an extra ten years. It’s more reasonable to replace a regular-priced mattress every 10 years or so.

Do firm mattresses last longer than soft ones?

A common misconception is that firm mattresses last longer than soft ones. However, this claim is untrue. A mattress’s lifespan depends on the type of mattress it is, the thickness of its foundation, and the quality of materials it contains.

A soft mattress’s foundation layer should make up at least 50-percent of the mattress. If your bed is 12 inches thick, then the foundation should be at least 6 inches thick. Also, foam mattresses last longer than spring mattresses, which also helps your soft bed last. It’s important to prioritize your preferences when shopping for a mattress as well.

Can I put a new mattress on an old base?

It depends! Most mattress bases—box springs, slatted foundations, and solid foundations—last roughly 10 years, which is the same lifespan as most mattresses. Mattress foundations sag and become unsupportive with age, meaning they won’t support your new mattress properly and can void many mattress warranties.

Say you buy your base at the same time as your mattress and then replace your mattress after 10 years. Putting a new mattress on that 10-year old base is a bad idea. But if your “old” mattress base is only 2 or 3 years old, then putting a new mattress on it is fine.

Conclusion

Durability is a must when you purchase a new mattress. After all, you don’t want to invest in a bed only for it to start sagging after a few months. With our guide of the best mattresses that last for years, you can compare different models and mattress brands to see what’ll work for you!

Beyond just picking a mattress that won’t sag, properly taking care of your mattress makes a major difference in how long your mattress lasts! Be sure to get a reliable foundation, use a mattress protector, and follow the manufacturer’s care guidelines!
