At some point or another, we’ve all woken up feeling stiff or achy, likely around the back, shoulders, hips, or butt. These are pressure points caused by an uneven weight distribution due to an awkward sleeping position or bad mattress.

“Finding the right mattress for you is important to improving your sleep,” says Dr. Rebecca Spencer, sleep scientist and professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “Since good sleep is critical to both our physical and mental health, a good mattress is a good investment.”

Many mattress brands design their mattresses specifically to soothe pressure points and prevent them entirely so you aren’t left achy forever. Finding the right mattress to soothe your pressure points varies for everyone, but we make matters easier.

We’ve compiled a list of the best mattresses for pressure points so you can sleep pain-free.

Getting a great mattress doesn’t have to be bad for the environment. Avocado is a carbon-negative mattress company best known for their flagship model, the Avocado Green Mattress. The Avocado Green Mattress is an eco-friendly hybrid bed filled with organic and upcycled materials.

The Avocado Green Mattress comes in two forms: standard or pillow-top.

The standard version is 11 inches thick and medium-firm, making it perfect for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and people with back pain.

The pillow-top version is 13 inches thick and has a latex pillow-top permanently sewn onto it. It has a medium feel great for couples, side sleepers, and combo sleepers. If you don’t like the idea of the pillow-top being permanently attached, stick with the standard variation and get a mattress topper as needed.

Regardless of which thickness you choose, the Avocado Green Mattress has roughly the same construction.

The Avocado Green Mattress has a GOTS organic certified cotton cover. Not only is cotton crisp and breathable, but the hand-tufted rosettes on the cover maintain the mattress’s structure and prevent wear.

Under the cover is a layer of GOTS organic certified wool, which serves a variety of purposes. Not only does wool regulate the mattress’s temperature, but it’s also a natural flame barrier, cushion, and keeps your mattress odor-free. Also, wool is hypoallergenic.

Beneath the wool is the GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex comfort layer. The comfort layer is 2 inches thick with the standard model and 4 inches thick with the pillow-top. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooling, and soothes pressure points well.

Inside the Avocado Green Mattress is a layer of upcycled pocketed coils with five ergonomic support zones. The coils provide extra support for the head, back, and legs while being softer around the hips and shoulders. This support core completes the design that makes the Avocado Green an excellent choice when considering organic and eco-friendly mattresses.

Types of Mattresses for Pressure Points

The type of mattress you have affects how well it soothes pressure points and supports your body. Let’s see how some popular types of mattresses stack up in terms of pressure relief!

Memory Foam

Memory foam is one of the best types of mattresses when you have painful pressure points. Memory foam mattresses are popular for their cushiony, hug-like feel, excellent for relieving achiness. Plus, it isolates motion well and is readily available through most mattress retailers.

An issue to keep in mind with memory foam beds is they get hot easily and aren’t the most responsive types of beds. We suggest looking into memory foam mattresses that are plant-based or infused with gel, copper, or graphite. Not only are these materials more breathable and bouncy than standard memory foam, but they also last longer.

Latex

Latex is a great type of mattress for relieving pressure points while also being sustainable. It’s made from the sap of rubber trees and comes in two forms: Talalay or Dunlop. Talalay is softer to the touch while Dunlop is firm and extra supportive. Either way, latex is known for being breathable, responsive, and durable.

While latex mattresses are eco-friendly, they can be expensive, often costing over $1000 for even twin or twin XL beds. This means that budget shoppers and bargain hunters may want to consider another type.

Still, latex mattresses last between 12 to 15 years on average, much longer than the lifespan of other beds. So, while you’ll have to spend a lot initially on a latex bed, its long lifespan makes up for the cost.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are one of the most common types of beds out there. Innerspring mattresses are made from steel coils to support your body, maximize airflow, and increase the bed’s bounce. Most innerspring beds also have pillow tops made from polyester, wool, cotton, or foam.

As one of the oldest types of mattresses still around today, innerspring beds have remained popular for being affordable. The beds are cheap, easy to find, and come in countless forms to suit any person. Still, cheap doesn’t mean good.

The main problems with innerspring beds are they’re noisy, cause motion transfer, and break quickly. The pillow tops can shift out of place, develop lumps, or go flat, so you’re left with practically no pressure relief.

Hybrid

In a way, hybrid mattresses are upgraded versions of innerspring mattresses. They feature coil support layers but have thick foam comfort layers to maximize pressure point relief.

While standard innerspring mattresses have open coils, hybrid mattresses feature pocketed spring coils independent from each other. This way, the coils are extra supportive and there’s less motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. For an in-depth comparison of these two coil types, see our open coils vs pocket springs guide.

Rather than a flimsy pillow top, most hybrid beds feature foam comfort layers similar to memory foam or latex mattresses. Thicker comfort layers made from foam increase a bed’s ability to alleviate pressure, soothing your pain and making it easier to sleep.

Still, hybrid mattresses can be expensive—costing over $1000 on average—yet still don’t have long lifespans—they usually only last between 5 to 7 years!

How to Choose a Mattress Firmness for Pressure Points

An important aspect of finding the right bed is figuring out what firmness you need. Mattress firmness refers to how much cushioning it provides. Cushioning directly affects pressure points and thus is crucial to relieving them.

Most mattress companies measure firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being extra-soft and 10 being extra-firm. You’ll most likely want a mattress that falls in the middle of this range as an overly firm bed will cause painful pressure build-up, but an overly soft bed may cause you to sink and leave you stiff or achy.

Choosing a mattress with the right firmness to soothe your pressure points comes down to your sleep position and weight.

Sleeping Position

Your sleeping position affects where your pressure points are and the areas which can be relieved with varying levels of cushioning.

  • Side sleepers should look for soft or medium mattresses to properly cushion the hips and shoulders.
  • Back sleepers need firm or medium-firm mattresses to prevent the lower back from sinking and throwing your spine out of alignment.
  • Stomach sleepers need firm mattresses to prevent the hips from sinking and causing lower back pain.
  • Combination sleepers should use medium mattresses as they provide a balance of support and cushioning to suit many sleeping positions.

Body Type

Another factor to look into when picking a mattress firmness is how much you weigh. Your body weight affects how much pressure you place on a bed and, in turn, how much cushioning you need.

The standard firmness level recommendations companies offer are based on a person who weighs between 130 to 230 pounds. Weigh more or less than this and you’ll need to alter your firmness choices slightly.

If you weigh less than 130 pounds, use softer beds than what normally suits your sleeping position. If you weigh over 230 pounds, use firmer beds than what normally suits your sleeping position.

FAQs

What is the best mattress for back pain and pressure points?

When dealing with both back pain and pressure points, evaluate your primary sleeping position. How you sleep is crucial when relieving pressure build-up and back pain. Side or back sleeping is ideal for soothing both your back pain and pressure points.

Side sleepers should use soft mattresses with thick support systems to cushion their body while aligning the spine. Try mattresses such as Zoma Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.

Back sleepers need medium-firm or firm mattresses to promote healthy spinal alignment without causing lumbar pressure build-up. We recommend looking into mattresses such as the Saatva Classic or Avocado Green Mattress.

What is the best mattress for side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain?

Hip and shoulder pain is often a result of an overly firm mattress when side sleeping. So, side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain should look for soft mattresses that still provide lots of spinal support to keep their bodies aligned.

When seeking a mattress for hip pain or aching shoulders, we suggest trying out mattresses including the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid, Zoma Hybrid, or Avocado Green Mattress.

What type of mattress is best to relieve pressure points?

Memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses work best for soothing pressure points because the foam comfort layers cushion the body well. Still, finding a mattress to soothe your unique pressure points varies based on how you sleep.

Side sleepers need medium or soft mattresses such as the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid, Zoma Hybrid, or Tuft & Needle Mint. Back sleepers are most comfortable on medium-firm to firm beds like Purple Hybrid Premier or Saatva Classic. Stomach sleepers should use firm mattresses such as the Saatva Classic.

Can a hard mattress cause hip pain?

Hard mattresses can cause hip pain depending on your sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, then firmer mattresses can cause painful pressure points on your hips and shoulders. However, stomach and back sleepers are unlikely to experience hip pain when sleeping on a hard mattress. If anything, back and stomach sleepers will be most comfortable on firmer beds.

Why does my body ache after waking up?

You might feel achy in the mornings for a variety of reasons, such as sleeping in a certain position for too long, using the wrong type of mattress, or chronic pain issues. Poor sleep quality can also make it harder for your body to function and restore tired muscles. When dealing with constant soreness in the mornings, the first thing to do is rule out any health conditions that may be causing your discomfort.

From there, upgrade your mattress and pillows to suit your sleeping position and maximize your comfort. By keeping your body properly aligned, you’re less likely to wake up feeling stiff or achy. Other ways to relieve morning aches and pains are through exercise, stretching, stress management, or changing your sleeping position.

Conclusion

You don’t have to suffer from pressure point pain forever. While a good mattress may not always cure your pressure point pain, it can significantly improve it. Even if your pain isn’t totally gone, relieving pressure points makes it easier to relax and sleep.

Take advantage of our mattress guide to find the most comfortable mattress for you and your pain. Most mattress brands offer sleep trials, so if you take a new mattress home and it doesn’t work out for you, exchanges are simple!
