Our Review Process: Each mattress we review undergoes a rigorous evaluation process. We assess comfort, support, cooling, and durability through both subjective experiences and objective tests.

Criteria include pressure relief, spine alignment, mattress responsiveness, motion transfer, edge support, and temperature regulation. This comprehensive approach ensures our reviews are thorough and unbiased.

I. Mattress Layers, Materials and Construction

From the moment I unboxed the Bear Original mattress, I could get a tactile sense of the high-quality foam materials used in its construction. Working from the base up, the mattress features a high-density support foam layer that provides long-lasting durability and a sturdy foundation. During my initial testing, this layer felt dense and supportive.

Moving upwards, the responsive Bear Dynamic Foam offers balanced support and deeper compression for better pressure relief. While testing the mattress, I noticed this layer adapted well to my body’s contours.

Nearing the top, the cooling gel memory foam layer draws away unwanted body heat and provides improved spinal alignment for a more comfortable sleep. From my first nights testing this layer, I could feel the contouring properties relieving tension, particularly when resting on my side.

To top it off, Bear’s breathable Tencel cover is made with naturally soft, long-lasting, and breathable Tencel fibers. Running my hands across the cover, I was impressed by its coolness and pleasant feel against my skin.

II. Sleeping Positions

Given that Bear rates their Original Mattress as a 7.1 out of 10 on the firmness scale, I was curious to see how it would perform for different sleeping positions. However, based on my personal testing experience, I found the mattress to be closer to an 8 or 9 on the firmness scale, making it quite a firm mattress overall.

As a side sleeper myself, I didn’t experience any painful pressure on my hips, which was a pleasant surprise considering the mattress firmness level. That said, I do generally prefer a slightly softer mattress for side sleeping.

When testing the Bear Original for back and stomach sleeping, I found the mattress firmness level provided excellent support and kept my spine well-aligned. These sleeping positions are where the mattress really shines, in my opinion.

While I believe the Bear Original can work for all sleeping positions if you prefer a firm mattress, it does seem more tailored to back and stomach sleepers based on my experience testing the mattress.

III. Response Time – Score: 9/10

A responsive mattress is crucial for combination sleepers like myself who tend to change positions throughout the night. It’s also crucial in mattresses for pressure points meant to alleviate chronic pain. You want a surface that quickly adapts to your body as you move, rather than leaving you feeling stuck or struggling to shift around.

To test the Bear Original’s response time, I used my tried-and-true method of dropping a 10-pound weight onto the mattress and observing how quickly it regained its shape. I was impressed by how rapidly the surface bounced back, with minimal residual indentation left behind. No fear of lasting sagging or body impressions here, folks.

Tossing and turning on the bed myself, I also noted how easy it was to change positions without feeling like I was fighting against the mattress. Based on my firsthand experience and the weighted test, I would give the Bear Original a 9 out of 10 for response time.

While it doesn’t quite reach the immediate, almost bouncy response of some latex hybrid mattresses I’ve tested, the Bear Original still performs exceptionally well in this category – especially considering it’s an all-foam model.

IV. Motion Isolation – Score: 8/10

If you share your bed with a partner, motion isolation is a key consideration. You want a mattress for couples that effectively absorbs movement, preventing sleep disturbances from a restless bedmate tossing and turning or getting up during the night.

To put the Bear Original to the test, I once again enlisted my handy 10-pound weights. I placed them on one side of the bed and then proceeded to roll around on the other side, mimicking the movements of a partner shifting positions.

Keeping a close eye on the weights, I noticed they did move slightly as I tossed and turned, indicating some motion transfer across the surface. However, the disturbance was minimal, and I don’t believe it would be significant enough to disrupt most sleepers.

Based on my motion isolation test and overall experience sleeping on the Bear Original with my partner, I would give it a score of 8 out of 10 as a mattress with motion isolation. While it doesn’t completely eliminate all motion transfer, the mattress does a commendable job of minimizing disturbances.

V. Edge Support – Score: 10/10

Edge support may not be the first thing that comes to mind when mattress shopping, but it plays a crucial role in how much usable surface area your bed provides. A mattress with sturdy edges allows you to comfortably sit or lie near the perimeter without feeling like you’ll accidentally roll off. It’s also a crucial safety feature in a mattress for seniors and similar.

I was genuinely surprised by how well the Bear Original performed in this category during my testing. As an all-foam mattress, I didn’t expect it to have particularly robust edge support. However, when I sat on the side of the bed, I felt stable and supported with minimal compression.

Lying down near the edge of the mattress, I also felt secure and didn’t experience any sensations of sliding or dipping too low. Even when I purposely scooted right up to the perimeter, the Bear Original maintained its shape and support impressively well.

For its outstanding edge support performance, especially considering its all-foam construction, I enthusiastically give the Bear Original a perfect 10 out of 10 score in this category.

VI. Cooling and Breathability – Score: 9/10

Overheating during the night can quickly ruin a good night’s sleep, which is why I always prioritize cooling and breathability when testing mattresses. The Bear Original impressed me in this regard, thanks in large part to its breathable Tencel cover.

When I first laid down on the mattress, I immediately noticed how cool and inviting the cover felt against my skin. Throughout my weeks of testing this cooling mattress, I never once woke up feeling hot or sweaty, even during warmer nights.

The gel-infused memory foam layer just beneath the cover also plays a role in the mattress’s temperature regulation, helping to dissipate body heat rather than trap it against your skin. Combined with the breathable cover, this layer works to maintain a consistently comfortable sleeping temperature.

While the Bear Original may not have the same icy-cool sensation as some mattresses with more advanced cooling technologies like phase change material or copper infusion, it still does an excellent job of preventing heat build-up. I’d rate its cooling and breathability a solid 9 out of 10 based on my experience.

This cooling ability is usually enough for most to sleep well, in my experience. However, if you are exceptionally prone to sleeping hot or live in an unusually hot climate, you may benefit from one of the cooling mattresses I’ve tested that have scored a perfect 10.

VII. Durability and Longevity

A mattress is a significant investment, so it’s crucial to choose one that will stand the test of time. While I can’t speak to the Bear Original’s long-term durability firsthand, given the relatively short testing period, there are several promising indicators of its potential longevity as a mattress that won’t sag and lose support.

Firstly, the Bear Original is made in the USA, which is often a sign of higher quality materials and construction compared to imported mattresses. It also comes with Bear’s limited lifetime warranty, suggesting the company stands behind the durability of their product.

During my inspection of the mattress, I was impressed by the apparent quality of the foams used in each layer. They felt dense and sturdy, without any concerning soft spots or signs of early deterioration. The Tencel cover was also tightly stitched and seemed capable of withstanding years of regular use, completing a durable mattress.

Based on my observations and Bear’s strong warranty, I don’t have any major concerns about the durability or longevity of this mattress. Of course, proper care and maintenance will always play a role in how long a mattress lasts.

VIII. Potential Drawbacks

While the Bear Original impressed me in many ways during my testing, there are a few potential drawbacks to consider depending on your personal preferences and needs.

Of course, these potential drawbacks are highly subjective and will depend on your individual needs and goals in a mattress. Despite these minor considerations, I still found the Bear Original to be a high-quality, comfortable option that I would gladly recommend to many sleepers.

Off-Gassing

As I noted earlier, I did experience some off-gassing odor when I first unboxed the Bear Original. While not overpowering, the smell was noticeable and took a few hours to dissipate fully. If you’re particularly sensitive to odors from mattresses in a box, this could be a potential drawback.

Mattress Type & Materials

The Bear Original is an all-foam mattress, so if you’re looking for a hybrid mattress with coils or one that uses natural materials like latex, you’ll want to consider other options. For example, these might be more up your alley:

Lack of Luxury Features

If you’re looking for a mattress with more luxurious features like a plush pillow top or Euro top or targeted support zones, the Bear Original may not meet those expectations.

Its straightforward, no-frills design prioritizes simplicity and affordability over bells and whistles, so keep that in mind when considering your personal preferences. For luxury cooling mattresses, I would quickly recommend these mattresses that I’ve previously tested:

Height

At 10 inches tall, the Bear Original has a relatively low profile compared to some other mattresses on the market. If you prefer a taller mattress or one with a more substantial look (and the extra features from these added materials), you may want to opt for something like:

  • The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid, which clocks in at 14 inches tall
  • The Zoma Boost, which stands a full 15 inches tall

Firmness

As I mentioned earlier, I found the Bear Original to be quite a firm mattress, rating it around an 8 or 9 out of 10 on the firmness scale. If you’re someone who prefers a softer, more plush feel, this mattress may not be the best fit for you.

In that case, you might prefer something that offers offer a bit more cushioning through a balanced medium feel, like:

Ultra-plush mattress lovers might prefer the Bear Elite Hybrid, which comes in three different firmness options, or a mattress like the Amerisleep AS5.

And those who desire a deeply firm mattress might want to try the Brooklyn Bedding Plank, which has a firm and extra-firm side thanks to its flippable design.

IX. Trial Period, Warranty, Pricing and Sizes

Before clicking the “buy” button on any mattress, it’s essential to understand the fine print regarding the trial period, warranty, pricing, and available sizes. Here’s what you need to know about the Bear Original:

Bear offers a 120-night risk-free trial period for the Original mattress, giving you ample time to decide if it’s the right fit for you. If you’re not satisfied within this timeframe, you can return the mattress for a full refund.

The Bear Original also comes with a limited lifetime warranty, providing excellent long-term protection against defects in materials and workmanship. This extensive coverage is a testament to Bear’s confidence in their product’s durability.

Compared to other popular 10-inch memory foam mattresses, the Bear Original is competitively priced. At the time of my review, a standard queen size is a solid value option in the all-foam category as a well-made mattress under $1000.

The Bear Original is available in all standard mattress sizes, twin to split king. Whether you’re shopping for a small guest room or a sprawling master suite, there’s a size to fit your space.

Overall, I’m impressed by Bear’s generous trial period and warranty, as well as the mattress’s affordable price point. It’s always reassuring to see a manufacturer stand behind their product with customer-friendly policies like these.

X. Customer Reviews

While my personal experience with the Bear Original was overwhelmingly positive, I always like to see what other customers have to say before forming my final opinion. I dug into some verified buyer reviews to get a sense of how the mattress performs for a wider range of sleepers.

After these reviews, I found a mix of experiences. While some customers were very satisfied with their purchase, others had complaints about the mattress’s firmness.

  • Jane B., a combination side and back sleeper, noted that the mattress was quite firm but expressed overall satisfaction with her purchase. She mentioned adding a plush mattress protector for extra cushioning and stated that she is pleased with the mattress so far.
  • Leslie gave the Bear Original a 5-star rating, sharing that her niece loves the queen-size mattress with the Celliant-infused cover. She also appreciated the two pillows that came with the mattress and was impressed with the quick shipping from Arizona to Texas.
  • Robert also awarded the mattress 5 stars, describing it as a firm bed at a wonderful price. He took advantage of a Presidents’ Day mattress sale on the Bear website, receiving a 35% discount. Although there was a slight delay in shipping, Robert seemed satisfied overall.

On the other hand, Iwona S. gave the Bear Original the lowest possible rating of 1 star, stating that she hates the bed. She compared sleeping on the mattress to lying on a carpeted floor, suggesting it was much too firm for her liking.

These reviews highlight the subjective nature of mattress preferences, particularly regarding firmness levels. While some customers clearly appreciate the supportive feel of the Bear Original, others find it too firm for their comfort. As always, it’s essential to consider your personal preferences and needs when evaluating customer reviews.

For a more comprehensive look at Bear’s sustainability efforts, the company has published a detailed 3Z Brand ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Report on its website. This transparency demonstrates Bear’s genuine dedication to operating responsibly and creating products that prioritize both customer health and environmental stewardship.

XII. Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance and care can go a long way in extending how long a memory foam mattress lasts and ensuring it remains in top condition for years to come.

Here are some tips for caring for your Bear Original mattress:

  • Use a Mattress Protector: While not mandatory, Bear recommends using a waterproof mattress protector to safeguard against spills, stains, and other potential damage. A good protector can also help keep your mattress feeling fresh and hygienic.
  • Spot Clean Only: If your mattress does become stained, spot clean the affected area using a mild detergent and warm water. After cleaning the mattress, be sure to let the mattress dry completely before remaking the bed.
  • Rotate Every Six Months: To promote even wear and prevent sagging, Bear suggests rotating your mattress 180 degrees every six months. This simple step can help extend the life of your mattress significantly.
  • Vacuum Regularly: To keep your mattress free of dust, dander, and other allergens, try vacuuming the surface with a soft brush attachment every few months. You can also sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress, let it sit for a few hours, and then vacuum it up for extra freshness.
  • Avoid Flipping: The Bear Original is designed to be used with the cover facing up at all times. Do not attempt to flip the mattress over, as this can damage the layers and affect its performance.

By following these straightforward care guidelines and using common sense (like avoiding jumping on the bed), you can help ensure your Bear Original mattress remains a comfortable and supportive sleep surface for many years to come.

XIII. Final Verdict – Score: 9/10

After weeks of hands-on testing and careful consideration of all the factors that contribute to a great mattress, I can confidently give the Bear Original a final score of 9 out of 10. This all-foam mattress truly impressed me with its comfort, support, and overall performance.

One of the standout features of the Bear Original is its firmness level. As someone who typically prefers a slightly softer mattress, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and supportive this firmer option felt. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper or simply enjoy a sturdy, stable sleep surface, I highly recommend giving the Bear Original a try.

The mattress also excelled in terms of responsiveness and cooling, two factors that are crucial for a good night’s sleep. I never felt “stuck” in the foam layers, and the gel-infused memory foam and breathable Tencel cover worked together beautifully to keep me at a comfortable temperature all night long.

Another area where the Bear Original shines is edge support. I was genuinely impressed by how stable and secure I felt when sitting or lying near the perimeter of the mattress, especially considering its all-foam construction. Couples and those who like to spread out will appreciate the usable space this feature provides.

Of course, the Bear Original may not be the perfect fit for everyone. If you’ve read through this review and have decided that the mattress doesn’t sound like it’s for you, feel free to browse through our other mattress reviews!
