However, after personally testing the Vaya Foam Mattress for over two weeks, I’m left very impressed with its thoughtful construction, pressure relieving comfort, and exceptional value. At under $700 for a queen size, this mattress proves you don’t have to sacrifice quality for an affordable price.

Our Review Process: Each mattress we review undergoes a rigorous evaluation process. We assess comfort, support, cooling, and durability through both subjective experiences and objective tests.

Criteria include pressure relief, spine alignment, mattress responsiveness, motion transfer, edge support, and temperature regulation. This comprehensive approach ensures our reviews are thorough and unbiased.

Layers, Materials, and Construction

The Vaya Mattress keeps things simple with just two layers of proprietary foam. Yet the company enhances its comfort through smart material choices.

At the base sits a thick layer of Vaya Base Foam designed to relieve painful pressure points while supporting proper spine alignment. I noticed right away how my shoulders and hips lightly sank into this layer, cushioning them without allowing too much sinkage that can cause a sleeper to feel swallowed by their bed.

Above lies a thinner comfort layer of Vaya’s open cell comfort foam. Open cell refers to a porous structure that circulates airflow, preventing heat buildup around the body. True to claims, I slept remarkably cool despite side and front sleeping.

The comfort material also contours wonderfully, customizing to individual body shapes for tailored firmness and support. Bounciness exceeded expectations too; I never felt “stuck” switching positions.

Finally encasing these layers, the Vaya’s breathable cover felt equally cool and pleasant to the touch. The woven construction looks and feels durable, complementing the 10-year warranty. With quality foams and protective covering, longevity doesn’t appear to be a concern for this budget mattress.

How Does It Sleep: Examining Sleep Positions

Given the Vaya Mattress falls in a medium firmness range, I had high expectations for accommodating all common sleep positions. Sure enough, my side sleeping remained comfortable throughout several nights, with no excess pressure buildup around hips or shoulders that some firmer beds cause.

I appreciate that firmness balances pressure relief and support. Otherwise, too soft feels and back misalignment can occur, or too firm feels that cause bony areas feel painful and numb. The Vaya Mattress hits that elusive sweet spot.

Stomach and back sleeping proved just as agreeable. My spine stayed neutrally aligned as I changed positions, important for reducing stiffness and pain.

For strict stomach sleepers, a slightly firmer option may better suit personal preference, but I had no discomfort whatsoever. Combination sleepers like myself will truly appreciate this adaptability and comfort consistency.

Responsiveness

A mattress’s responsiveness, or how quickly it regains its shape after pressure is applied, is an important consideration. Insufficient responsiveness means each time you switch sleeping postures, you must climb out of the deep indentation your previous posture created, which disrupts comfort.

Meanwhile, faster recovery translates to uninterrupted, customizable comfort necessary for deeper, more restorative rest. Responsiveness is especially important in mattresses for combination sleepers, as the surface needs to keep up with swift and sudden changes in position.

Many all foam models sag and conform so deeply, sleepers feel “trapped” if they switch positions during the night. Excessively slow response times undermine comfort and support when you roll over or climb out of bed too. Through innovative materials however, Vaya combats this common complaint with superior responsiveness that blew away my expectations.

Dropping a 10-pound weight onto the surface, I observed medium initial sinking followed by rapid recovery into its original form. No lingering body impressions remained afterwards, suggestive of the quick response time.

For lighter sleepers this likely translates to no issues whatsoever. Meanwhile, average and plus-sized individuals may experience slight sunk-in feelings but the bed bounces back quickly before posing misalignment risks.

Regardless of weight, the Vaya Mattress should accommodate combination preferences exceptionally. Much to my surprise and pleasure, I awarded it a perfect 10 for responsiveness and would confidently recommend it for restless partners.

Motion Isolation & Edge Support

For couples, mattress motion isolation represents how well your mattress insulates against movement from the other sleeper. Too much motion transfer and you may wake up each time your partner shifts positions or climbs out of bed.

Foams generally isolate better than coil alternatives, as I experienced here. Lying down with my weights placed a few inches near the edge, I asked my partner to switch positions next to me. This change caused only minor reverberations.

Rolling back and forth myself provoked similarly little disturbance on my partner’s side, attributable to the effective base layer. As one of the better performing models in this category, I rate the Vaya Mattress’s motion isolation an 8 out of 10. Lying down on it, you’re unlikely to notice most movements, but springs still perform slightly better when it comes to mattresses for couples.

Mattress edge support describes the stability and security experienced sitting on or lying near the sides of the bed. All-foam mattresses have a tendency to compress significantly under body weight, almost creating a falling sensation along the perimeter.

Surprisingly, the Vaya Mattress showcases much greater reinforcement and consistency moving all the way to the edges. I detected only small degrees of compression compared to other foam beds when sitting upright or laying partially off the side. The mattress felt similarly supportive to models incorporating springs around the edge.

For an all-foam construction, I would score mattress edge support an impressive 9 out of 10.

Breathability & Cooling

Excess heat retention represents a common grievance for memory and mixed foam options. Dense materials trap body heat near the surface, causing uncomfortable stickiness and night sweats. Through specialized open cell structures and ventilated covers, certain brands combat this sleeping hot phenomenon.

I’m happy to report the Vaya Mattress is one such model. It sleeps remarkably cool and comfortable thanks to similar advanced cooling properties integrated across materials.

The permeable Vaya Comfort Foam allows constant airflow to whisk away trapped warmth. I never felt overly warm, even though I sleep mostly on my side. In this position, heat easily builds around pressure points as the mattress surface embraces my body.

For exceptional temperature regulation especially considering the affordable price, I give the Vaya Mattress’s cooling and breathability a 9 out of 10 rating.

Durability & Longevity

A durable mattress is important because it maintains consistent comfort and support for many years so you don’t have to frequently replace an expensive bed. Though the Vaya Mattress has competitively low prices, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending it if I thought the bed had lackluster durability.

However, considering initial material quality and resilient construction, I don’t foresee any glaring durability or longevity issues with the Vaya Mattress over an average ownership span of 8 to 10 years. It could potentially last even longer than that with smart care by a mattress owner.

The two foam layers feel dense and well made, without too much quick compression indenting during testing. Cover fibers have a tight weave that seems difficult to tear without sharp objects. And the thick foam base should provide lasting support barring any improper handling like jumping.

Most foam beds will develop slight, permanent body impressions overtime but moderate sinkage extent and quick responsiveness suggest the Vaya will withstand years of regular use. Its 10-year warranty surpasses the average coverage period too, indicative of internal confidence.

Between smart engineering, proven materials, and robust policies, buyers should enjoy many peaceful nights ahead on a mattress that won’t sag.

Who Might Dislike the Mattress

No mattress suits every preference perfectly. So I want to discuss a few characteristics that may turn certain shoppers away from the Vaya Mattress, despite its many strengths.

Strict stomach or back sleepers desiring extra lumbar reinforcement may find the medium firmness somewhat less than ideal, though I wouldn’t classify the bed as “soft” either. If back pain is a concern, however, I would recommend a truly firm mattress.

The standard foam construction also lacks the luxurious feel and durability of latex or hybrid mattresses. The Vaya won’t conform exactly like standard memory foam varieties either. If you’re interested in those styles of mattresses, I’ve reviewed many of the top competing mattress models:

I have also reviewed the brand’s other mattress, the Vaya Hybrid.

And if you’re searching for special cooling features like conductive graphite or copper infusions, other brands offer more cutting-edge heat fighting technologies. For example, if you want a gel memory foam mattress that’s comparable to the Vaya’s prices, I would recommend the Zoma Start mattress that I’ve also reviewed.

Policies, Prices, & Sizing

One area Vaya clearly outpaces direct rivals lies with exceptionally consumer-friendly policies. Every mattress purchase comes standard with free shipping, 100 night trial, and a 10-year warranty.

Mattress Sleep Trial

Once the Vaya Mattress arrives at your door, you have 100 nights to sleep on it and test the mattress. Returns are completely free within the trial window if you find the bed unsuitable. Many competitors at this price point either deduct shipping fees or charge hefty restocking penalties.

Mattress Warranty

The 10-year warranty also doubles as the industry standard, instilling confidence in expected usable lifespan. Should indentations exceed 1 inch or defects arise from faulty workmanship/materials, Vaya will repair or replace your mattress completely free including shipping. It’s hard finding longer assurances without spending four times as much.

Mattress Prices

Finally, in terms of affordable pricing, Vaya mattresses start at under $500 for a twin and reached $899 for king/California king sizes. Considering most quality, all-foam beds can exceed $1000 for queen size mattresses, this is an undeniably attractive offer.

You can even compare the Vaya Mattress’s prices to popular budget mattress competitors below:

Interest free financing makes the mattress even more budget friendly if needed. Compared to models with similar layered foam designs and policies, the Vaya comes in hundreds less. Overall, exceptional quality relative to cost earns a perfect value score in my book!

What Owners Say

Curious how the Vaya Sleep mattress performs for actual verified customers? Well, the average rating stands at a remarkable 4.6 stars. Recurring praise includes excellent pressure relief, minimized motion transfer, and temperature regulation for such an affordable pick.

For example, Mary B. describes the mattress as having a soft top layer over a firm bottom layer. She notes that the regular foam, as opposed to memory foam, prevents her from sinking all the way through to the firm base layer. Mary also mentions that as a lighter person (140 lbs), heavier people over 200 lbs may have a different experience with the mattress. Overall she finds the Vaya to be very comfortable.

Another reviewer, Melanie H., has chronic back injuries and after one month finds the Vaya mattress helps ease her morning pain and stiffness. She describes the firmness as “not too hard or soft”. She recommends the Vaya, especially for those with back pain issues.

One downside she notes, however, is there was an initial off-gassing odor from the mattress that took about 1 1/2 weeks to dissipate. As someone sensitive to smells this was noticeable but not overwhelming.

Complaints mostly originate from firmer mattress seekers. Considering the glowing feedback, the Vaya Mattress clearly satisfies all expectations for the vast majority – exactly what I determined testing it myself!

Environmental Impact

One growing consideration for today’s shoppers involves understanding environmental ramifications of their purchases, and this extends to eco-friendly mattresses. From sustainably sourced materials to less wasteful shipping methods, certain brands place more focus on maintaining small carbon footprints.

Vaya makes noticeable efforts here through their CertiPUR-US certified foam and renewable material integration. All foams meet rigorous standards concerning recycled content and emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

CertiPUR-US approved formulas also exclude concerning chemicals like mercury, lead, and formaldehyde commonly used by other manufacturers. Using responsibly engineered materials ensures healthier indoor air quality and lessened environmental impact.

Maintenance & Care

Caring properly for your mattress extends usable life while maintaining a clean, healthy sleeping environment between washings.

I always recommend purchasing a waterproof mattress protector as Step 1; these shields defend against spills, sweat, and other accidents from penetrating inside. Without this moisture barrier, permanent stains and premature breakdowns become inevitable.

Aside from using a mattress protector, Vaya’s website suggests spot cleaning the mattress as issues arise. Apply gentle dish soap and warm water directly only on the affected area, patting gently with a soft brush. Never submerge or soak the entire mattress.

Rotating your mattress 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months can also combat uneven wearing patterns that degrade support and comfort over time. Vaya states flipping is not required, just maintain the same upward facing side.

Provided you follow these easy steps, your mattress should deliver many years of restful sleep!

Final Verdict

If seeking exceptional quality and body contouring comfort on a budget, I highly recommend the Vaya Mattress as a top value pick. Side, stomach and back sleepers alike should melt into its pressure relieving foam layers while properly supporting spine alignment all night long. Responsiveness and cooling excel among competitors as well, while strong motion isolation suits couples nicely.

Attractive policies lend further credibility regarding durability and satisfaction rates. I would expect the average owner easily gets 8 years or more before considering replacement.

And showing customers don’t have to sacrifice ethics or health for savings, Vaya takes admirable steps to promote environmental sustainability through responsible material choices.

For the initial low investment, finding another mattress that so expertly blends health, value and comfort seems almost impossible. The Vaya Mattress remains one of my top recommended buys for shoppers balancing affordability and a better night’s sleep.
