Amerisleep vs. Loom & Leaf Mattress Reviews

Foam mattresses continue to be popular for their contouring comfort. But they’re not all made the same. Each company has a different approach, philosophy, and process for making their products. All of those factors from the quality of the materials to the manufacturing influence what feels good to you, and personal characteristics and preferences come into play. Your weight, sleeping position, and whether or not you sleep hot or cold influence what you like in a mattress, too. We’ve taken the time to research Amerisleep’s lineup and Saatva’s Loom & Leaf so you can get an in-depth look at how their mattresses match up.
Bodyweight significantly influences your needs for mattress support, conformity, and temperature regulation. Within the context of this mattress comparison, we’ll divide sleeper weights into:
- Lightweight = under 130 pounds
- Average weight = 130 to 230 pounds
- Heavyweight = over 230 pounds
The other major factor influencing mattress choice is sleep style or sleeping position. Most people shift to several different positions throughout the night, but the three main styles we’ll focus on are stomach, back, and side. Each sleep position requires different levels of support and conformity.
For example, stomach sleepers typically need more support to prevent the lower back from overarching. However, that same support might be too much for a side sleeper who needs the mattress to conform and contour to their shoulders and hips. Back sleepers maintain a relatively neutral posture and therefore, sleep well on a variety of mattress types and firmness levels.
Amerisleep Mattresses
Amerisleep has been making mattresses since 2007. They’ve developed an ongoing commitment to eco-friendly packaging, materials, and shipping to support growing environmental concerns. Innovative technologies in their mattresses, such as Bio-Pur®, address some of the problems inherent to foam like heat buildup.
30 Second Summary: Best Mattress of 2023
- Amerisleep AS3 — The Editors’ at Sleep Junkie recommend Amerisleep’s AS3 as the best mattress of 2023. The AS3 features plant-based memory foam and state-of-the-art zoned support technology to deliver healthier, more restorative sleep. Plus, they offer one of the most generous warranties in the industry, protecting your mattress from damage for 20 years. Add in the nearly 6,000 reviews—it makes sense why the AS3 is our top recommendation of 2023.
Mattresses aren’t the only Amerisleep products on the market. Amerisleep also sells foundations and bedding online and in their brick and mortar stores. You can try each of the mattresses in an Amerisleep showroom to get a sense of your preferred comfort level. Amerisleep has embraced the mattress in a box revolution by offering all of their beds online. Once purchased, the mattress gets shipped directly to your door.
Amerisleep’s five models are the following:
- Amerisleep AS1: Amerisleep’s only two-layer model is also the shortest model (10 inches). It’s ideal for people seeking a very firm mattress, stomach sleepers, and back sleepers, but is too firm for side sleepers.
- Amerisleep AS2: The AS2 has an added transition layer of HIVE® technology to reinforce proper sleeping positions. It stands 12 inches high and is Amerisleep’s best mattress for back pain.
- Amerisleep AS3: Amerisleep’s most popular model, the AS3, has three layers and 3 inches of cushioning Bio-Pur® foam. The result is a medium mattress comfortable for sleepers of all weights and sleep styles.
- Amerisleep AS4: The AS4 mattress contains 4 inches of cushioning Bio-Pur® foam to give this bed an ultra-soft feel.
- Amerisleep AS5: At 14 inches tall, the softest of the Amerisleep line-up is also the tallest. It has an added fourth layer of Active Flex material to improve this bed’s responsiveness and offer healthy support to plus-size sleepers.
Amerisleep’s Materials, Cover, and Construction
All Amerisleep mattresses are covered in a soft, breathable cover designed to increase airflow through the mattress. The cover is also completely washable, which helps preserve the life of the mattress.
The AS1, Amerisleep’s base model, consists of two foam layers. On top are two inches of Bio-Pur®, an advanced open-cell foam. All open-cell foams improve airflow, but advanced open-cell foams take that to the next level for premium air circulation. Underneath the Bio-Pur® layer are eight inches of a denser Bio-Core® support foam.
The AS2 is topped with the same two inches of Bio-Pur® as the AS1. However, this model is softer and more conforming because of a three-inch Affinity layer with HIVE® technology (Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation & Energy) beneath the Bio-Pur®. Its hexagonal cutouts allow heat to move away from the body while they conform to the body’s curves. The cutouts are closely gathered at the head, back, and feet where you need extra support, and spaced farther apart at the shoulders and hips to provide pressure relief.
The AS3 is a medium mattress that strikes a balance between support and conformity. It has the same layers as the AS2, but the top Bio-Pur® layer is thicker and the Affinity transition layer is thinner, making it softer. This mattress is the Amerisleep’s popular model, and it works for sleepers of all weights and sleep styles.
The AS4 is another three-layer mattress. Its four-inch-thick Bio-Pur® top layer conforms to the body while a one-inch Affinity layer adds breathability. The seven-inch Bio-Core® support layer provides stability and durability.
The AS5 is Amerisleep’s only four-layer mattress. This soft mattress might have too much sinkage if it weren’t for the two-inch Active Flex layer between the Bio-Pur® and Affinity layers. The Active Flex helps the foam bounce back into position after the body compresses it, preventing sinkage.
Amerisleep’s Cooling Technologies and Temperature Regulation
At the onset of sleep, your body temperature drops. The body has to maintain that lower temperature throughout the night. Foam mattresses have been known to trap body heat and cause sweating; as a result, manufacturers have begun to use different methods to combat the overheating associated with foam.
Amerisleep’s mattresses are known for their excellent cooling abilities. The combination of Bio-Pur® and HIVE® technologies increase airflow and breathability. In particular, the advanced open-cell structure of Bio-Pur® provides more space for air to move through the mattresses.
The AS1 is the only Amerisleep mattress without the Affinity layer with HIVE® technology. This layer is meant for additional pressure relief, which is mainly a concern with softer beds (the AS2-AS5). Since softer beds are also prone to trapping more heat, the HIVE® layer wicks away heat and moisture that can build up in the softer models (AS2-AS5).
Overall, Amerisleep’s beds are above average for temperature regulation and breathability.
Amerisleep Mattresses’ Support, Conforming, and Motion Isolation Abilities
Mattress support should keep the spine in a neutral position. Unnatural or excessive spinal curvature leads to neck, shoulder, hips, and back pain. Bodyweight also affects the curvature of the spine. The heavier you are, the more support your mattress should have to keep your spine in a neutral position.
Mattresses that conform well reduce pressure on the hips and shoulders. Supportive and conforming materials can limit the transfer of motion. Good motion isolation prevents a restless partner from waking you during the night.
Amerisleep mattresses have excellent conformity. The softer AS4 and AS5 models, in particular, fit to body curves and relieve pressure points because of the thicker Bio-Pur® foam and added Active Flex layer, respectively. Amerisleep’s five firmness options allow you to choose the bed with just the right amount of conformity and support for your needs.
Amerisleep mattresses also have superior motion isolation. The Bio-Pur® absorbs motion so you’ll barely notice a partner that’s tossing and turning.
Like many other foam mattresses, Amerisleep models lack good edge support. The foam compresses if you sit on the edge, which can make it feel like you’re falling off the bed.
How Durable are Amerisleep Mattresses?
Amerisleep mattresses stand out for their durability. They’re backed by a 20-year, prorated warranty. It includes one of the best indentation replacement policies on the market, covering indentations of .75 inches deep or more. Overall, these mattresses have a life expectancy of at least eight to ten years, depending on sleeper weight and proper maintenance.
Amerisleep’s Trial Period, Warranty, and Return Policies
Warranties vary from company to company. The warranties for foam mattresses usually include an indentation depth at which the mattress can be replaced. Watch out for complicated warranties and return policies. Complicated warranties may require photo or video proof of defects while others may prorate the warranty every two years for the life of the mattress. It can be confusing to know what percentage you’ll need to pay and how to activate the warranty.
Amerisleep mattresses come with a 100-day sleep trial. The company suggests sleeping on the mattress for 30 days before initiating a return. If you decide the mattress isn’t for you, Amerisleep will arrange for the mattress to be picked up and donated or recycled.
If you choose to keep the mattress, it’s backed by an extended 20-year warranty that is broken into two parts. In the first ten years, defects in workmanship and structure are fully covered and replaced. In the second ten years, defects qualify customers for a new mattress, but they pay for 50 percent of the original purchase price as well as shipping costs.
This warranty has an excellent indentation policy that covers indentations over ¾ of an inch deep. There are limits to coverage that are expressly stated in the warranty. They include but are not limited to burns, tears, or stains caused by the owner or general misuse. For the warranty to be valid, the mattress must be on a proper foundation, which is defined in the warranty. Amerisleep may require proof of damage before a repair or refund is issued.
The warranty only applies to the original purchaser with proof of purchase.
Amerisleep’s Social Responsibility
Amerisleep uses partially plant-based foam in their mattresses to minimize off-gassing and increase breathability. This practice reduces the use of petroleum products. Amerisleep also uses eco-friendly manufacturing processes to reduce emissions and waste. Their returned mattresses are donated to local charities and non-profit organizations whenever possible.
Who Are Amerisleep Mattresses For?
Amerisleep makes mattresses for all types of sleepers; those who prefer soft beds, those who want something firmer, those who toss and turn, and everybody in between.
Their AS1 model is great for people seeking the firmest mattress but isn’t a fit for plus-size or side sleepers.
The AS2 is a medium-firm mattress for back sleepers and those with back pains, but it might feel just a tad too firm for some side sleepers.
Their AS3 is their medium model offering an even balance of comfort and support. We like their AS3 as the best mattress overall because it’s adaptable and built to promote healthy sleeping positions even if you toss and turn.
The AS4 is an ultra-soft mattress with 4 inches of Bio-Pur®, so it’s perfect for sleepers wanting a cloud-like feel from their bed.
Lastly, their AS5 is a soft mattress built to tailor plus-size sleepers regardless of their sleeping position.
Amerisleep mattresses also have excellent motion isolation (good for couples), good breathability (good for those who sleep hot), and a solid warranty.
Loom & Leaf Mattresses
The Loom & Leaf is made by Saatva. They are available online and at Macy’s department stores. These mattresses come with free white glove delivery rather than the mattress-in-a-box style of some online retailers. That means the mattress is hand-delivered and set up in your room of choice. They also include the removal of your old mattress. The mattress materials are sourced in the United States, and Saatva is committed to eco-friendly manufacturing practices.
Customer service is Saatva’s pride and joy, and they call each customer after the initial purchase to make sure you’re fully satisfied with the delivery and setup of the mattress. Saatva has a wide range of sleep products like pillows, adjustable bases, and latex and innerspring mattresses. The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness options.
- Loom & Leaf: Both the relaxed firm and the firm are constructed using the same layers. A quilted cover sewn onto a thin layer of foam covers a thicker gel-foam that’s designed to support the spine. The comfort layers are supported by two more layers of dense poly-foam.
Loom & Leaf Materials, Cover, and Construction
The Loom & Leaf has an organic cotton cover that’s quilted to a layer of foam. The natural thistle “fire sock” meets strict flammability standards and completely encases the mattress. It replaces harmful fire retardants present in other foam mattresses.
Beneath the cover is a gel-infused memory foam layer. This foam cools and conforms to the body. Next is a two-inch memory foam layer that provides extra support for the spine.
The two-inch transition layer is a different firmness depending on the customer’s mattress choice (relaxed firm or firm). In the firm mattress model, this layer is made of a denser foam than in the softer model. Finally, there’s a 5.5-inch poly-foam support layer for stability.
Loom & Leaf’s Temperature-Regulating Technologies
The Loom & Leaf doesn’t do quite as well in regards to breathability and temperature regulation. The cooling gel memory foam helps. However, that same memory foam layer conforms to the body and tends to trap heat. As such, this mattress is probably best for those who sleep cool.
Loom & Leaf Mattresses’ Support, Conforming, and Motion Isolation Abilities
The ability to conform and contour to the body is one of the Loom & Leaf mattress’s greatest strengths. The mix of memory foams cushion and relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips. The Loom & Leaf mattress offers amazing sleep for side sleepers, especially those who suffer from chronic pain. That same conforming ability appealing to side sleepers is comfortable for many back sleepers, as well. The spinal support foam layer successfully supports the lower back.
However, all that conforming doesn’t work as well for stomach sleepers. Sinkage under the pelvis bows the back, causing sleep interruptions and pain. The Loom & Leaf also has problems with edge support, which can be more of an issue for heavyweight sleepers.
How Durable are Loom & Leaf Mattresses?
Though the Loom & Leaf has CertiPUR-US® certified foams, their durability remains average. The foams wear out at a fairly typical rate, which means the mattress will need to be replaced after seven to eight years. The company offers a 15-year warranty that’s prorated starting after two years.
Loom & Leaf’s Trial Period, Warranty, and Return Policies
Loom & Leaf’s 120-day trial period is one of the longest you’ll find. If you’re not satisfied within that time period, you can return the mattress at a $99 transportation cost.
Loom & Leaf has a multi-tiered 15-year warranty. For two years, the warranty covers the full cost of a new mattress. For the final 13 years, the company offers to recover or repair the mattress at the cost of $99 for shipping each way. In years three through five, you can opt for a new mattress rather than repair it for 25 percent of the original price. In years six through ten, you can opt for a new mattress over getting it repaired for 50 percent of the original price. During years 11 to 15, you can buy a new mattress for 75 percent of the original price.
If you choose a new mattress over repairs, you get to keep the old one. Like Amerisleep, the warranty is only in effect as long as the mattress has appropriate support as defined in the warranty. The warranty includes coverage for indentations over three-quarters of an inch.
Customers must notify Saatva in writing for any claims. The warranty only applies to the original purchaser with proof of purchase.
Loom & Leaf’s Social Responsibility
The Loom & Leaf mattress contains foams that are CertiPUR-US® certified. That means they’ve been tested for harmful emissions, the content of harmful materials like lead and formaldehyde, and eco-friendly manufacturing practices.
Who Are Loom & Leaf Mattresses For?
The Loom & Leaf’s incredibly comfortable organic cotton cover and two top layers of conforming memory foam make it ideal for side sleepers. The foam layers all but remove pressure from the shoulders and hips for pain-free sleep. However, all that conformability doesn’t work as well for stomach sleepers who need more support. Some back sleepers will love the feel of the lumbar support while others might not need it.
The gel-infused memory foam helps disperse heat, but hot sleepers may still get too warm with this model.
Amerisleep vs. Loom & Leaf: The Bottom Line
- The Loom & Leaf memory foam mattress contours to the human body like a glove. It’s meant for those who want to sink into their mattress and love a warm sleep.
- Amerisleep brings options to the table. Sleepers of all weights and sleep styles should be able to find a supportive, comfortable mattress at Amerisleep.
- The Amerisleep warranty offers a longer, more complete coverage, but you get to keep your old mattress with Saatva’s warranty.
A mattress is a long term investment in your health—you’ll spend nearly one-third of your life on it. It’s worth finding one that both meets your budget and unique sleep needs. Look at the trial period, warranty, and return policies as well to make sure you’ve made the right choice.
Remember, mattresses are an individual decision. The right mattress is the one with which you can’t wait to spend eight hours.
Overview
Both of these companies make luxury foam mattresses. That means they use premium materials to make the interior layers and high-quality fabrics and details in their mattress covers. Amerisleep’s five foam mattress models offer a range of support levels and conforming abilities. Their extensive line has models that appeal to a broad range of sleepers. They’re the one-stop-shop for luxury foam mattresses.
The Loom & Leaf mattress is Saatva’s luxury foam mattress. It comes in two firmness levels and offers superior conforming comfort. Though this model appeals to more than one type of sleeper, it doesn’t work for the same broad range of sleepers like Amerisleep’s five models.
