Adjustable beds can be a huge boon to seniors because they can help with so many issues. They can reduce sleep apnea and acid reflux symptoms. They can alleviate back and joint pain. They can even help you get in and out of bed by doing the work of sitting up for you. There’s almost nothing adjustable beds can’t do!

However, with the rising popularity of adjustable bed frames has come a flood of cheap, poor-quality beds that won’t stand the test of time. These beds mixed into the market and made it a lot harder to find quality products.

The good news is we’ve weeded out the poor quality, shoddily made adjustable beds for you. Below are some of the best adjustable bases for seniors on the market.

30 Second Summary: Best Adjustable Bed for Seniors of 2024

  • Our top recommendation is the Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+, named for how it goes beyond and offers far more than just the ability to customize your sleep position.
  • Our runner-up recommendation is the Zoma Adjustable Bed, an inexpensive model that still offers a wealth of features, including a zero-clearance design that lets you use the bed with a flat or slatted surface.

How to Choose the Right Adjustable Bed for You

With all the amazing benefits of adjustable beds, they’ve been exploding in popularity in the last few years. That means the market has gotten saturated with adjustable base models. So it can be tough to decide which one is the right one for you. You might be asking how you can tell if you’re getting a quality product that will stand the test of time and offer the comfort you need.

The good news is that choosing the right adjustable bed doesn’t have to be difficult in the least. You just need to keep a few personal attributes in mind while you’re shopping. Adjustable beds have a lot of components and are more complicated than traditional bed frames. That means you’ll have to pay more attention to their specifications when you’re shopping.

“A good night’s sleep is imperative to the healing process,” says Miller. “I educate my patients that coming to physical therapy a few times a week is a good base but what they do at home is the most important.”

“My job is to provide them with the tools, education, and exercises to feel better and sleeping posture is just as important. Adjustable beds really allow the patients to customize their sleep and improve breathing, reduce leg swelling, and overall rest.”

Weight Capacity

All adjustable beds have a maximum weight capacity. This is the amount of total weight the bed can handle before the mechanisms that lift the mattress start to strain. This includes your mattress and all sleepers who will be using the bed. So you’ll need to know your weight, your partner’s weight (if applicable), and your mattress’s weight.

Add all those together and ensure any adjustable bed you buy has a maximum weight that exceeds the total weight you come up with. You’ll want to give yourself some wiggle room. Don’t get an adjustable bed if your and your mattress’s weight bump against its max weight. Find a frame with a higher capacity.

Bed Height

Seniors who have mobility issues need to be especially careful to get their bed height right. The ideal height for your bed is when you can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed with your feet flat on the floor and your thighs horizontal or close to it.

The good news is many adjustable bases have several height options to let you choose the best profile for you. But you have to remember the height of the adjustable bed frame is only part of the equation. Your mattress thickness or depth also determines a good deal of your bed’s profile.

The frame and mattress together decide the total bed height, as you will not have box springs or a mattress foundation on your bed. So for example, a 12 inch mattress with an adjustable bed that’s 15 inches tall will have a total height of 27 inches.

Single/Split Base

If you’re building an adjustable bed, you’ll have to think about whether you’re going to be doing a split or single base. Those who get a full or queen adjustable base will almost assuredly be doing a single base rather than a split one.

However, king adjustable bases are almost always the opposite. Even if you have a single king size mattress, you’ll probably still have two separate twin XL size adjustable frames. These split king adjustable beds can be programmed to move together to lift the single mattress.

Or you can do a true split king with two twin XL mattresses that can move independently of each other. Some brands sell split king size mattresses, while others may require you to buy two twin XL mattresses.

Ease of Assembly

Some adjustable beds can be awful to put together. They might come with multiple nuts and bolts and brackets. Some are so complicated they may even require expert assembly. On the other hand, some adjustable beds are easy to assemble and can be put together in a few minutes with minimal tools.

If you’re handy and don’t mind a project, you might not care if your adjustable bed is tough to assemble. However, if you’re not all that handy or don’t have a lot of time, you might want to look online for an adjustable bed’s assembly instructions before you purchase it.

Range of Motion

Not every adjustable bed can move in the same way. Some have a much wider range of motion than others. If all you want is to elevate your head or feet a little bit, how much the bed articulates may not be all that important to you. If, however, you want to sit all the way up to sleep or need a bed that can help you with getting in and out, you’ll need deeper articulation.

More articulation allows you to sit straight up in bed, which can especially help those with sleep apnea or mobility issues. So look for something that can go up to 60 or even 70 degrees. 90 is completely vertical, but no adjustable bed does this because a 90-degree angle would allow your mattress to fall forward.

Special Features

Some adjustable beds just move up and down. Some come with tons of bells and whistles. There’s nothing wrong with adjustable beds that don’t feature massagers, heaters, or underbed lighting. Getting an adjustable bed that doesn’t have these features is a good way to get a quality product at an affordable price.

If you want all the bells and whistles, be ready to pay for them. An adjustable bed with luxury features and a low price tag may have skimped on quality to have them. You can have simplicity and affordability of a basic model, or. But if you find a highly affordable adjustable bed with lots of luxury features, be suspicious of the quality.

Warranty

Adjustable beds have a lot of components that can break and wear out. So you’ll want a robust warranty to go along with your adjustable bed frame. A solid warranty for an adjustable bed should last for at least a decade.

You’ll also want to ensure your warranty covers everything you need it to cover. Manufacturers who make a quality product will not put a bunch of fine print in their warranty that allows them to get out of covering defects and errors on their part. It’s normal for them to refuse to cover the damage you cause. But any damage that’s on them should be covered by their warranty.

Price

The average price range of an adjustable bed is pretty large. More affordable ones can come in around $1,000, while luxury ones can cost upwards of $3,500. To ensure you’re getting a quality product at a fair price, take a look at the size and features of your adjustable bed.

If your adjustable bed frame is smaller and doesn’t have any luxury features, it should not cost much more than the lower end of the price range. If your adjustable bed costs closer to the higher end of the spectrum, it should be larger and have lots of luxury features.

Hospital Beds vs. Adjustable Beds

While they can fulfill similar functions, hospital beds and adjustable beds are not necessarily the same thing. They’re both adjustable sleeping surfaces that can relieve medical conditions for a higher quality of life.

The main difference between the two is that hospital beds are ultimately meant to be utilitarian medical devices, while the primary focus of adjustable beds is increased comfort. For seniors with more severe medical conditions, a hospital bed may be the better choice. But for seniors who want a better night’s night, an adjustable bed can be a good choice.

 Adjustable BedsHospital Beds
Pros* Extra features like massagers and underbed lighting
* Slips inside regular bed frames
* Often smart home compatible and may have an app
* Easier to clean
* More likely to have rails
Cons* Less likely to be covered as a medical device by insurance
* May not adhere to FDA guidelines for medical devices
* Comes in fewer sizes, often only for single sleepers
* May need to be manually adjusted
* Tends to lack special features

Mattresses Compatible with an Adjustable Base

Naturally, if you’re going to get an adjustable base, you’re going to want a mattress for an adjustable bed that works with that base. Nothing would be worse than getting your brand new adjustable bed all set up only to have it break your mattress the very first time you use it.

If you have an innerspring mattress, this is exactly what will happen. Innerspring mattresses have open coil systems that are stiff and incompatible with anything other than a flat surface. Putting an innerspring mattress on an adjustable bed can break the mattress, the base itself, or both.

This might very well mean you need a new mattress to go along with your new adjustable bed because Innerspring construction is still the most popular mattress type on the market, though it is starting to lose ground to other types of mattresses that actually are compatible with adjustable bases.

Memory Foam

Of all the mattresses that can be put on adjustable bases, memory foam mattresses are arguably the best. They’re flexible enough to bend into any shape you can imagine. They’re light enough to work with most weight capacities. And they’re durable enough to stand up to night after night of being bent out of shape. Not to mention they’re the most affordable mattress type that can go on an adjustable bed.

Memory foam mattresses aren’t just a great fit for adjustable bases. They’re amazingly comfortable in their own right. Flexible polyurethane foam – otherwise known as memory foam – can mold itself to fit your shape. This creates a mattress for pressure points and keep your spine aligned at the same time.

Despite all its redeeming qualities, memory foam does have some issues. First off, memory foam can be a lot hotter than other materials. Technologies to help it breathe and make it more thermoconductive help make memory foam better at regulating its temperature than it used to be. For example, see our gel memory foam vs memory foam guide.

Memory foam is also not as responsive as the other materials compatible with adjustable beds. So active sleepers who like to move around at night, such as those seeking a mattress for combination sleeping, might want to look elsewhere.

Our memory foam mattress buying guide covers all you might wish to know about this type.

Natural Latex

Natural latex comes from the sap of the rubber tree. It’s almost as flexible as memory foam and much more durable. That means latex mattresses can stand up to night after night of being bent and lifted without wearing out – sometimes for decades.

Natural latex is also much more responsive and breathable than memory foam. That means hot sleepers and active sleepers might be more comfortable on a natural latex bed. Natural latex is also virtually the only material you can have if you want all-natural or organic foam.

Watch out, though. Sometimes natural latex is incredibly heavy. That means you’ll need to pay extra attention to your adjustable bed’s weight capacity to ensure your latex mattress isn’t too heavy for it. Natural latex is also the most expensive material on the market, so it may be out of reach for some shoppers.

For more information read our latex mattress buying guide.

Hybrid

Some people think hybrid mattresses aren’t compatible with adjustable beds, but this is mostly untrue. Many hybrids are compatible with adjustable bases because of their pocketed coils. Pocketed coils move independently of one another.

That means, unlike open coil networks, pocketed coils can bend when the adjustable bed does. Make sure the manufacturer rates their hybrid mattress for an adjustable bed before you purchase. But most of the time, the hybrid will be able to handle the movement.

Hybrid mattresses are increasing in popularity because they’re a great choice for almost everybody. They boast the bounce and breathability of springs and the contouring adaptability of foam. That means everyone of every sleep position, sleep temperature, and sleep style can enjoy these mattresses.

Beware that they may not be as durable as all-foam mattresses, though. So hybrids might not last as long on an adjustable base as other mattress types, as our memory foam vs hybrid guide explains.

They’re also heavy and expensive, so you’ll need to watch your weight capacity and your budget – just like with natural latex. Our hybrid mattress buying guide covers all the pros and cons, along with anything else you might want to know.

FAQs

What’s the best mattress for an adjustable base?

The best mattress type for an adjustable base is memory foam. Memory foam mattresses have a lot going for them. They’re lighter, more affordable, and more flexible than any other mattress type. It’s very easy to find a memory foam mattress that’s comfortable and fits your budget.

However, memory foam isn’t the best by an absolute landslide. Latex and hybrid mattresses are also compatible with adjustable bases and have lots of comfort to offer. A natural latex mattress is much more durable than any other mattress type – and it’s springy and natural to boot.

Hybrid mattresses are the perfect fit for those who want both coils and an adjustable bed because their pocketed coil cores can move with the adjustable base. As long as you choose a mattress that can move with the bed when it lifts out of the flat position, the best mattress for your adjustable bed is the best mattress for you.

How do I know what adjustable bed height is right for me?

The right bed height for you is based on your own height. Generally speaking, the ideal bed height is whatever height it takes to ensure that when you sit on the bed with your feet flat on the floor, your thighs are horizontal or at least nearly horizontal.

For the average person, this height is usually about 24 inches. However, it may go up or down depending on how tall you are.

Those who want a low or high-profile bed can feel free to play with their adjustable bed’s height since many adjustable beds come with a range of profile options. However, if you have pain or mobility issues, you should try to stick as close as possible to your ideal bed profile.

What is a good warranty length for an adjustable base?

Adjustable base warranties can vary in length from just a few weeks to well over two decades. The warranty is an indicator of how long the manufacturer expects their product to last and how much faith they have in it. That means you should be highly suspicious of any warranty that’s under a year. But the ideal warranty length is at least 10 years.

However, the warranty length is not the only thing you need to consider. You’ll want to read your warranty’s fine print to ensure there aren’t a bunch of loopholes that allow the manufacturer to wriggle out of offering coverage. You’ll also want to be aware of what your warranty covers.

All warranties should cover manufacturer defects such as errors or premature aging. But if a warranty’s fine print eliminates virtually all coverage, it doesn’t matter how long its coverage lasts. Keep in mind that some warranties also offer coverage that becomes much more limited after a certain period of time without actually expiring.

What’s the best adjustable bed for side sleepers?

Side sleepers can have any adjustable bed frame they’d like. Side sleepers need to think more about their mattress than their adjustable bed frame. A mattress for side sleeping needs plush cushion that has a lot of contouring for pressure relief. That means a soft or medium-soft memory foam mattress or memory foam hybrid is likely best for you and your adjustable base.

Adjustable base position is also more important for side sleepers than adjustable base brand. You’ll likely need to stick closer to the flat position if you sleep on your side, maintaining gentler angles to avoid pain.

How much does a good adjustable bed cost?

The average price of an adjustable bed is between $1,000 and $3,500. While it is possible to get an affordable adjustable bed frame, you should definitely look twice at the quality of any adjustable base that costs less than $1,000.

You’ll also want to consider whether you’re being overcharged for adjustable bases that cost upwards of the average price range. While some adjustable beds have tons of luxury features that justify their price tags, features like massagers and underbed lighting don’t cost enough to install to justify a $4,000 or $5,000 price tag.

Bottom Line

Adjustable beds have tons of great benefits. They can do everything from alleviating pain to reducing sleep apnea and acid reflux symptoms. They can even improve the overall quality and quantity of your sleep.

And with so many fantastic adjustable beds on the market today, you’re sure to find one that’s perfect for your needs and budget. You can even choose a mattress with an adjustable bed, as many brands offer bundles.
