Top Recommendation of 2026: Amerisleep AS3

After testing more than 50 mattresses, I named the Amerisleep AS3 the best mattress for migraines of 2026. It is one of only two picks on this list with a 10 out of 10 in both cooling and motion transfer, the two scores I weighted most for this guide.

During testing, the surface felt cooler to the touch than the traditional memory foam beds I compared, and when my partner got out of bed, I barely felt it on my side. On my back, my hips stayed level with my shoulders. The AS3 is my top pick for side, back, and combination sleepers who run warm and share a bed with someone who moves.

The Amerisleep AS3 is the best mattress for migraines in 2026 after I tested more than 50 mattresses, with a 10 out of 10 for both cooling and motion transfer. A mattress can’t treat migraines, but it can shape three things that affect your sleep: how much heat builds up under you, whether a partner’s movement wakes you, and how your neck and spine line up.

Why Trust Sleep Junkie's Recommendations?

Every mattress featured on Sleep Junkie is evaluated using the same testing framework for support, pressure relief, cooling, motion isolation, edge support, responsiveness, and overall value. Learn How We Test Mattresses.

The best mattress for migraines stays cool, keeps a partner’s movement on their side of the bed, and holds your head, neck, and spine in a straight line. After testing more than 50 mattresses, I found the Amerisleep AS3 did all three most consistently. The 14 picks below cover memory foam, hybrid, latex, gel grid, and innerspring builds, with firmness running from a soft 3 out of 10 to firm builds near 8.

No mattress treats migraine. What a mattress can do is shape the conditions you sleep in. It decides how much heat builds up under you, whether you feel it every time your partner rolls over, and where your neck sits for eight hours. For some people, it also decides what the bedroom smells like for the first few weeks. Those are the things I tested for.

Each pick has an award label for a specific need, like side sleeping, sleeping hot, or sharing a bed. Every review ends with who the bed fits and who should look at a different pick. Below the reviews, you will find what the research says about sleep and migraine, how to match firmness to your sleep position, and which bedroom changes are worth making.

Trial periods on this list run from 100 nights to a full year, with one exception that I call out in its review. A long trial matters here, because it can take weeks to learn how a new bed fits into your sleep and your migraine pattern. If your headaches change, get worse, or come with new symptoms, talk to your doctor first.

How We Selected These Mattresses

I started with more than 50 mattresses and cut the list to 14 by looking at what tends to break up sleep for people with migraine. Cooling and motion transfer carried the most weight, since heat and a partner’s movement are two common reasons people wake at night, and a mattress has direct control over both.

From there, I checked whether each bed kept my head, neck, and spine in a straight line in the positions it is built for, which certifications it carries for shoppers who are sensitive to smells, and how long its trial runs. I also made sure side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers each have more than one pick that fits.

How I Tested and Ranked the Best Mattresses For Migraines

I tested more than 50 mattresses for this guide, and 14 made the list. I scored every pick on the same six measures you will see in each score box.

For cooling and breathability, I noted how the surface felt to the touch on first contact and again after the first hours, compared with the other beds I tested in the same session. For motion transfer, I lay still while my partner shifted, rolled over, and got in and out of bed. For edge support, I sat on the perimeter the way you would to get up at night.

For response time, I dropped weights on the surface and tracked how quickly it came back when I changed positions. Trial period reflects how long you get to sleep on the bed before you decide, and value compares each bed’s results with its price.

I also lay on my back, side, and stomach on each bed and checked whether my hips stayed level with my shoulders and whether my neck sat in line with my spine. Those notes appear in each review as sleeper-fit guidance.

The overall score weights all six measures equally, but the ranking does not. Cooling and motion transfer decide it, which is why the AS3 ranks first even though seven picks score higher overall, and the Zoma Boost and Nolah Evolution tie for the top score at 9.5. The AS3 and AS6 are the only two beds here with a 10 in both, and the AS3 does it in one medium feel that worked on my back and side, at a lower price than the AS6. I never change a score to fit a ranking.

Every bed on this list went through the same tests, and every review names a limitation and a better pick for sleepers it doesn’t suit.

You can read the full process on our testing methodology page.

Sleep Junkie uses hands-on product evaluation, product-spec review, owner-feedback review where available, and expert review where applicable. Health-related claims are routed to credentialed reviewers when the topic requires added clinical or scientific oversight. Pages with completed commentary from our expert review board should show the reviewer clearly on the page.

Mattresses do not diagnose, treat, or cure migraines. A supportive mattress may help some sleepers feel more comfortable, but severe, persistent, radiating, or neurological symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Watch Our Amerisleep AS3 Video Review

Among the 14 mattresses in this guide, the AS3 earned the top spot because it paired a cool surface with a quiet one better than any other bed near its price. It is one of two picks with a 10 out of 10 for both cooling and motion transfer. The other is the AS6 Black Series, which sits at a higher price point and comes in firmer builds.

During testing, the Bio-Pur® foam felt less heat-retentive than the traditional memory foam beds I compared. The surface felt cooler to the touch through the first hours and did not warm up as quickly under me. When my partner rolled over or got out of bed, the movement barely reached my side.

On my back, my hips stayed level with my shoulders. On my side, my shoulder settled in without my waist sagging. That balance is why the medium feel worked for me in both positions, and why it suits combination sleepers who switch between them.

The tradeoff is the edge. At 8 out of 10, the AS3 ties for the lowest edge support score on this list. Sitting on the side to get up at night feels softer than it does on the coil beds. The AS3 fits a side or back sleeper who runs warm and shares a bed with someone who moves.

9.2 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 8 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 10 Cooling & Breathability

I picked the AS3 as the best mattress for migraines because it scored a 10 in both of the categories I weighted most, and it did that in a single medium feel that worked across positions. When my partner got in and out of bed during testing, the movement barely registered on my side. The surface also stayed cooler to the touch than the traditional memory foam beds I compared, which is the heat behavior I wanted from an all-foam pick.

Best For:

  • Side, back, and combination sleepers who want one medium feel
  • Hot sleepers who still want the close contour of memory foam
  • Couples where one partner moves or gets up at night

Compare Instead:

  • Amerisleep AS6 Black Series if you want the same 10/10 cooling and motion scores on a coil core with a firmer edge
  • Zoma Boost if you want a 10/10 edge and a top value score in a taller hybrid
  • Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid if you want a much softer surface at 3 out of 10

The AS3 feels like a true medium. My shoulder and hip sank in enough to take the pressure off on my side, but I never felt like I was sinking past the point of support. The foam contours closely, then recovers quickly enough that rolling over took little effort. It is not a bouncy bed, and sleepers who want to float on top of the surface may prefer a latex or coil pick.

The AS3’s cooling result starts at the surface. The Refresh cover is built to feel cool on contact, and the Bio-Pur® foam below it has an open-cell structure that lets more air move than traditional memory foam, which matches what I felt through the first hours of testing.

The HIVE® transition layer is zoned, softer under the shoulders and hips and firmer under the back, which is what kept my hips level on my back while my shoulder settled on my side.

The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, a program that tests foam for certain chemicals and for low VOC emissions.

Pros

  • Cooling & Breathability (10/10): the surface felt cooler to the touch than the traditional memory foam beds I compared
  • Motion Transfer (10/10): a partner getting out of bed barely registered on my side
  • Response Time (9/10): close contouring without a stuck feeling when I changed positions

Cons

  • Edge Support (8/10): the perimeter compresses more than the coil beds when you sit to get up
  • Only one firmness, so stomach sleepers and people who want a very firm bed have no build to switch to
  • The 100-night trial sits at the shorter end of this list

Why The Amerisleep AS3 Won

Among the 14 mattresses in this guide, the AS3 earned the top spot for pairing a 10 out of 10 in cooling with a 10 out of 10 in motion transfer, in one medium feel that kept my hips level with my shoulders on my back and let my shoulder settle on my side. Seven picks carry a higher overall score, but none of them pairs those two results.

I kept coming back to two results on the AS3. The surface felt cooler than the traditional memory foam beds I compared, and my partner getting out of bed barely reached my side. If heat or a restless partner is what wakes you, that pairing matters more than any single score. It is the bed I would hand a side or back sleeper who runs warm and shares a bed.

Watch Our FORM Prime Video Review

The FORM Prime is a grid mattress, not a foam one, and that changes how it handles pressure. During testing, the GelGrid flexed right at my shoulder and hip on my side while staying firm everywhere else. I got pressure relief without the hammock feeling some soft foam beds create.

Grid beds can ripple when someone moves, but this one did not. The Integra-Mesh woven through the grid kept the surface steady when my partner shifted, which is why the Prime holds a 10 out of 10 for motion transfer. It also holds a 10 for edge support, and sitting on the side felt controlled rather than collapsing.

The Prime also carries a 365-night trial, one of four on this list. For a migraine shopper, a full year means you can test the bed through different seasons, stress levels, and attack patterns before you decide.

The tradeoffs are cooling and value. Cooling scored a 9, a step behind the four picks that hold a 10. Value scored an 8. The Prime comes in one medium feel, so strict stomach sleepers who need a very firm bed should test it carefully during the trial. It fits a side or combination sleeper who wants pressure relief, a quiet surface, and a year to decide.

9.3 Overall Score
  • 8 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 10 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The FORM Prime is one of two picks, with the Nest Bedding Sparrow, that hold a 10 out of 10 in motion transfer, edge support, and trial period. During testing, the grid gave way at my shoulder and hip on my side while the rest of the surface held firm. When my partner moved, the surface stayed steady instead of rippling across to my side.

Best For:

  • Side sleepers who want pressure relief without deep sink
  • Couples who want a steady surface with a firm edge
  • Shoppers who want 365 nights to test a new bed

Compare Instead:

  • Saatva Classic if you want a 365-night trial with three firmness options to choose from
  • Leesa Sapira Chill if you want a 10/10 cooling score and a choice of three comfort levels

The Prime feels different from foam. There is a light, plush give at the very top, then the grid takes the load. On my side, I felt the grid cells compress under my shoulder and hip and push back everywhere else. Rolling over was easy because the grid springs back as fast as it compresses.

The Prime’s motion result comes from its middle layer. The GelGrid is built from open cells that flex only where they are pressed, and the Integra-Mesh reinforcement keeps the grid from rippling, which is why my partner’s movement stayed on their side.

The ZoneCoil 7-Series unit underneath has seven zones, which kept my spine level while the grid did the cushioning.

The open cells are designed to let air move through the comfort layer, and the foams are CertiPUR-US® certified with OEKO-TEX® certified materials.

Pros

  • Motion Transfer (10/10): the grid stayed steady instead of rippling when my partner moved
  • Edge Support (10/10): sitting on the side felt controlled, not collapsing
  • Trial Period (10/10): 365 nights to test the bed across a full year

Cons

  • Cooling & Breathability (9/10): a step behind the four picks that score a 10
  • Value (8/10): the price sits above several picks with similar scores
  • One medium feel only, so there is no firmer build for strict stomach sleepers

FORM Prime

What surprised me on the FORM Prime was how still the grid stayed. It gave way at my shoulder and hip on my side, then held firm everywhere else, and my partner’s movement never rippled across. With a full year to test it, this is the bed I would suggest to a side or combination sleeper who wants pressure relief without sinking.

Watch Our Zoma Boost Video Review

The Zoma Boost ties the Nolah Evolution for the highest score in this guide, a 9.5, and it earns that with three 10s: value, edge support, and motion transfer. Zoma designs it with recovery in mind, which is where its athlete label comes from. For a migraine shopper, what matters is that it pairs a quiet surface with a cool one.

During testing, the comfort layers cushioned my shoulders and hips on contact, while the zoned coils kept my hips from dropping. I got deep cushioning without losing my spinal line. When my partner shifted on the far side, the movement barely registered on mine.

The surface also felt cooler to the touch through the first hours than the denser foam beds I compared, so the thick comfort system did not come with the heat buildup I expect from plush beds. At 15 inches, it is one of the tallest beds on this list.

The tradeoffs are response time and trial length. At 9 out of 10, the surface releases a beat slower than the six picks that score a 10, and the 100-night trial is the shorter end of this list. The Boost fits a side or combination sleeper who wants a plush hybrid and shares a bed with someone who moves.

9.5 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Zoma Boost ties the Nolah Evolution at 9.5, the highest score on this list, and it is one of three picks with a 10 out of 10 for value. When my partner shifted during testing, movement barely reached my side, and the zoned coils kept my hips from sinking below my shoulders even under the thick comfort layers.

Best For:

  • Side and combination sleepers who want a plush hybrid
  • Couples who want low motion transfer and a firm edge
  • Shoppers who want a top value score

Compare Instead:

  • Nolah Evolution if you want the same 9.5 score with a lifetime warranty
  • FORM Prime if you want a 365-night trial instead of 100 nights

The Boost feels plush on top and supportive underneath. The comfort layers cushioned my shoulders and hips on contact, then the Reactiv foam and zoned coils took over, so I kept my spinal line without feeling stuck.

The Boost’s cooling result comes from its top layers. The graphite infused into the Energex memory foam is designed to pull heat away from the surface, which lines up with the cooler feel I noticed compared with denser foam beds. The Reactiv foam below absorbs movement before it reaches the coils, which is where the low motion transfer comes from. The zoned edge coils add firmness at the perimeter and through the middle of the bed. Zoma’s foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Pros

  • Motion Transfer (10/10): a partner’s movement barely registered on my side
  • Edge Support (10/10): the zoned edge coils firm up the perimeter
  • Value (10/10): one of three picks with a top value score

Cons

  • Response Time (9/10): the surface releases a beat slower than the latex and coil picks that score a 10
  • Trial Period (9/10): 100 nights is the shorter end of this list
  • At 15 inches, it may need deeper-pocket sheets and a lower frame if bed height matters to you

Zoma Boost

The Boost cushioned my shoulders and hips on contact, but the zoned coils never let my hips drop out of line. When my partner shifted, I barely felt it, and the thick top did not trap heat the way denser foam beds did. I would point a side or combination sleeper who wants a plush hybrid for a shared bed here.

Watch Our Vaya Hybrid Video Review

The Vaya Hybrid holds a 10 out of 10 for value, one of three picks on this list to do so, and it earns its place by covering the basics well at a lower price. It also holds a 10 for edge support. During testing, I felt secure sitting anywhere along the perimeter.

Response time was the other strong result. When I dropped weights on the surface, it sprang back right away, and changing positions through the night took little effort. The breathable cover, open-cell foam, and coil airflow kept the surface cooler than the denser all-foam beds I tested, which earned a 9 for cooling.

Motion is where the Vaya gives ground, and it matters on this page. At 7 out of 10, it holds the lowest motion transfer score in this guide. A partner rolling over will reach your side more often here than on any other pick. If a partner’s movement tends to wake you, that is a real limitation.

The Vaya fits a solo combination sleeper, or a couple where neither person moves much, who wants a cool, responsive hybrid at a lower price.

9.2 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 7 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Vaya Hybrid gives budget shoppers a cool, responsive surface and a 10 out of 10 edge. During testing, weights dropped on the surface sprang back right away, and I felt fully supported sitting along the entire perimeter. Its medium feel worked for me on my back, side, and stomach.

Best For:

  • Shoppers who want a top value score
  • Solo sleepers who change positions often
  • Sleepers who want a firm, usable edge

Compare Instead:

  • Zoma Boost if you share a bed with a restless partner and want the same top value score with a 10/10 for motion transfer
  • Amerisleep AS3 if you want the close contour of memory foam with a 10/10 for both cooling and motion

The Vaya Hybrid feels balanced and lively. The foam on top gives a light cushion, then the coils push back. Rolling from side to back, I felt the surface return under my shoulder almost immediately.

The Vaya’s quick response comes from its coil unit. Pocketed coils sit under a Vaya Comfort Foam layer, so the surface springs back rather than holding a body shape. Vaya added extra supports along both sides, which explains the secure edge I felt.

The open-cell foam and lightweight cover let air move through the bed. Because the coils sit close to the surface, movement travels farther across the bed than it does on picks with thicker foam layers. The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Pros

  • Value (10/10): one of three picks with a top value score
  • Edge Support (10/10): I felt secure sitting anywhere along the perimeter
  • Response Time (10/10): weights sprang back right away, and position changes took little effort

Cons

  • Motion Transfer (7/10): the lowest motion score in this guide, so a restless partner is more likely to reach your side
  • Cooling & Breathability (9/10): a step behind the four picks that hold a 10
  • The 100-night trial is the shorter end of this list

Vaya Hybrid

The Vaya surprised me at its price. I felt secure sitting anywhere along the edge, and the surface sprang right back when I changed positions. The one thing I would warn a light sleeper about is motion, since a partner’s movement travels more here than on any other pick. It is my choice for a solo sleeper on a budget.

Watch Our Helix Midnight Luxe Video Review

The Helix Midnight Luxe earned the side sleeper spot because its zoned coils let my shoulders and hips sink in while keeping my spine straight. That balance is what side sleepers need most, since the shoulder and hip carry most of the load in that position.

During testing, it also performed well on motion. It holds a 10 out of 10 for motion transfer, so a partner’s movement stayed on their side, and a 10 for edge support, thanks to reinforced edges that widen the usable surface.

Cooling scored a 9. Helix sells the Midnight Luxe with a standard TENCEL™ cover or an upgraded GlacioTex cooling cover. If you sleep hot, the cover you choose is the first decision to make.

The tradeoff is value. At 7 out of 10, it ties with the Saatva Classic for the lowest value score in this guide. It also comes in one medium feel. The Midnight Luxe fits a side sleeper with broad shoulders who wants zoned support and shares a bed.

9.0 Overall Score
  • 7 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Midnight Luxe gave my shoulder and hip room to sink in on my side while the zoned coils kept my spine in line, which is the combination side sleepers need. It also holds a 10 out of 10 for both motion transfer and edge support, so it works for side sleepers who share a bed.

Best For:

  • Side sleepers with broad shoulders
  • Couples who want low motion transfer
  • Sleepers who use the full width of the bed

Compare Instead:

  • Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid if you want a much softer side-sleeping surface with a 10/10 cooling score
  • Nest Bedding Sparrow if you want a 10/10 for motion transfer with a 365-night trial

The Midnight Luxe feels medium, with a plush top over firmer support. On my side, my shoulder sank in further than my waist, which is exactly what keeps the spine level in that position.

The zoned lumbar support is built to keep the hips from dropping on your back. The surface has enough bounce that changing positions did not feel like work.

The Midnight Luxe’s side-sleeping result starts with SupremeSupport 4.0, a high-density memory foam that gave me cushion with a floor under it.

On my side, my shoulder dropped in far enough to spread the load across my upper arm and ribcage, then stopped instead of sinking further, so pressure built at the shoulder last rather than first.

Below that, a unit of up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils concentrates its reinforcement under the hips and around the full perimeter. That is why my hips stayed level with my shoulder and my spine ran straight between them, and why the edge held when I sat to get up.

The standard TENCEL™ cover is breathable rather than actively cooling. It did not warm as fast as the denser comfort systems I compared, which fits its 9 out of 10 cooling score.

Two upgrades change the build: a GlacioTex cooling cover with a CoolForce heat transfer layer, and an ErgoAlign extra-firm foam section under the hips for more lower back support.

For a side sleeper who needs shoulder relief without the hips sagging, the standard build already delivers both. The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Pros

  • Motion Transfer (10/10): a partner’s movement stayed on their side of the bed
  • Edge Support (10/10): reinforced edges widen the usable sleep surface
  • Zoned coils let my shoulder sink in on my side while keeping my spine level

Cons

  • Value (7/10): tied for the lowest value score in this guide
  • Cooling & Breathability (9/10): the strongest cooling cover is an upgrade, not the standard cover
  • One medium feel only, so there is no softer or firmer build to choose

Helix Midnight Luxe

On my side, the Midnight Luxe let my shoulder sink in while the zoned coils kept my waist up, which is exactly what I look for in a side-sleeping bed. My partner’s movement stayed on their side, too. If you sleep on your side with broad shoulders and share the bed, start here, and choose the cooling cover if you run warm.

Watch Our Leesa Sapira Chill Video Review

The Leesa Sapira Chill is the only pick on this list with a 10 out of 10 in both cooling and response time. That pairing is why it earned the hybrid spot. It stays cool like the best foam beds here and moves like the best coil beds.

What stood out during testing was how the quilted top delivered plush comfort without the heat that usually comes with it. The cooling cover felt cooler to the touch through the first hours than the standard pillow-top fabrics I compared. The layered foams gave consistent pressure relief without too much sink.

The zoned coils held my hips and lower back in line across positions, and the bed comes in plush, medium-firm, and firm builds. That range makes it one of the easier beds on this list to match to your sleep position.

The tradeoff is motion. At 9 out of 10, it is good but a step behind the seven picks that hold a 10. Value scored an 8. The Sapira Chill fits a hot sleeper who changes positions often and wants to choose their firmness.

The Sapira Chill is the only mattress in this guide with a 10 out of 10 for both cooling and response time. • Back and side sleepers who want zoned hip support

Compare Instead:

  • Amerisleep AS3 if a partner’s movement is your bigger concern, since it holds a 10/10 for both cooling and motion transfer
  • Saatva Classic if you want a 365-night trial with three firmness options

The Sapira Chill feels plush on top and lively underneath. The quilted surface gave way gently under my shoulder, then the foam and springs pushed back so I stayed on top of the bed instead of in it. Rolling over was quick and easy.

The plush build will suit most side sleepers, the medium-firm build suits back and combination sleepers, and the firm build is the pick for stomach sleepers.

The Sapira Chill’s cooling result starts with the Ultra Cool Cover, which uses cooling fibers designed to draw heat away from the surface. That matches the cooler feel I noticed compared with standard pillow-top fabrics.

Leesa’s plant-based GreenFlex foam has an open-cell structure meant to let heat escape. Zoned springs concentrate support under the hips, which is why my lower back stayed in line, and the springs give the bed its fast response.

Pros

  • Cooling & Breathability (10/10): the cover felt cooler to the touch than standard pillow-top fabrics I compared
  • Response Time (10/10): the surface pushed back quickly every time I changed positions
  • Three comfort levels (plush, medium-firm, firm) make it easy to match to your sleep position

Cons

  • Motion Transfer (9/10): a step behind the seven picks that hold a 10
  • Value (8/10): the price sits above several picks with similar scores
  • The 120-night trial is shorter than the four picks offering a full year

Leesa Sapira Chill

The Sapira Chill gave me the plush feel of a quilted top without the heat I expect from one. The cover felt cooler than the standard pillow-top fabrics I compared, and the springs pushed back every time I rolled over. For a hot sleeper who changes positions often, this is the hybrid I would choose, in whichever of its three firmness levels fits your position.

Watch Our Saatva Classic Video Review

The Saatva Classic is the only coil-on-coil bed on this list, and it feels like a classic innerspring in the best way. During testing, I slept on top of the surface instead of sinking into it. For back and combination sleepers who dislike the hug of foam, that is the main reason to choose it.

It holds a 10 out of 10 for edge support and a 10 for response time. When I rolled from side to back, the surface pushed back right away, with no shape to climb out of. The dual-coil design also lets air move through the bed, which made it one of the cooler beds I tested and earned a 9 for cooling.

The Saatva also carries a 365-night trial and comes in three firmness levels and two heights. That gives you room to find the right build and a full year to test it.

The tradeoffs are motion and value. A coil-on-coil bed passes more movement than foam-heavy picks, and it scored a 9 for motion transfer. At 7 out of 10, it ties with the Helix Midnight Luxe for the lowest value score in this guide. The Saatva fits a back or combination sleeper who wants a buoyant surface and does not share a bed with a restless partner.

9.2 Overall Score
  • 7 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 10 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Saatva Classic is the only coil-on-coil bed in this guide, and it holds a 10 out of 10 for edge support, response time, and trial period. During testing, I rested on top of the surface, and it pushed back immediately each time I changed positions. The lumbar zone met my lower back on my back instead of leaving a gap.

Best For:

  • Back and combination sleepers who want an on-top feel
  • Shoppers who want three firmness levels and two heights
  • Sleepers who want a full year to test a new bed

Compare Instead:

  • Leesa Sapira Chill if you want a 10/10 for both cooling and response time
  • PlushBeds Signature Bliss if you want a responsive latex feel with certified organic materials

The Saatva feels buoyant and supportive. The Euro pillow top adds a soft first layer, then the coils lift you back up. On my back, the center of the bed felt firmer where my lower back needed it. Side sleepers with broad shoulders will likely prefer the Plush Soft build over Luxury Firm.

The Saatva’s on-top feel comes from its two layers of coils, which push back instead of contouring. The 3-inch Euro pillow top adds cushion, and Lumbar Zone Quilting firms up the center third of the bed, which is what I felt meet my lower back. The coil design also leaves room for air to move, which explains the cooler feel compared with the dense foam beds I tested. The cover is made with an organic cotton blend.

Pros

  • Response Time (10/10): the surface pushed back right away when I changed positions
  • Edge Support (10/10): among the strongest edge results in my testing
  • Trial Period (10/10): a 365-night trial with three firmness levels to choose from

Cons

  • Motion Transfer (9/10): the coil-on-coil design passes more movement than foam-heavy picks
  • Value (7/10): tied for the lowest value score in this guide
  • The on-top feel will not suit sleepers who want deep, close contouring

Saatva Classic

On the Saatva, I rested on top of the bed instead of in it, and the coils pushed back the moment I moved. On my back, the lumbar zone met my lower back. I would steer back and combination sleepers here if they dislike the hug of foam, and I would remind couples that the coil-on-coil design passes a bit more movement.

Watch Our Nolah Evolution Video Review

The Nolah Evolution ties the Zoma Boost for the highest overall score in this guide, a 9.5, and it is one of three picks with a 10 out of 10 for value. It earned the pillow-top spot because it delivers a deep, cushioned surface without giving up support underneath. I tested the Luxury Firm build with Nolah’s GlacioTex cooling pillow-top upgrade.

During testing, it relieved pressure at my shoulders and hips while keeping my spine in line. The zoned foams and coils firm up through the middle of the bed, so the plush top did not let my hips sink below my shoulders.

Pillow-top beds tend to run warm, but this one did not. With the GlacioTex pillow top, the surface felt cooler to the touch through the first hours than the denser pillow-top beds I compared. That upgrade costs extra, so keep in mind that my cooling notes reflect the upgraded build. It also holds a 10 for motion transfer and a 10 for edge support.

The tradeoffs are response time and trial length. At 9 out of 10, the thick foam releases a beat slower than the latex and coil picks, and the trial is 120 nights. The Evolution fits a side or back sleeper who wants a plush top without losing lower back support, especially in a shared bed.

9.5 Overall Score
  • 10 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Nolah Evolution ties the Zoma Boost at 9.5, the highest overall score in this guide, with 10s for value, edge support, and motion transfer. During testing, the plush top cushioned my shoulders and hips, while the zoned support underneath kept my hips level. The surface also felt cooler to the touch than the denser pillow-top beds I compared.

Best For:

  • Side and back sleepers who want a plush top with lower back support
  • Hot sleepers who like pillow-top beds
  • Couples who want low motion transfer

Compare Instead:

  • Zoma Boost if you want the same 9.5 score in a slightly softer 5 medium feel
  • Saatva Classic if you want a pillow top on coils with a 365-night trial

In Luxury Firm with the GlacioTex pillow top, the Evolution feels luxurious on top and steady below.

My shoulder sank into the quilted foam on my side, then the firmer layers and coils held me in place.

On my back, the zoned middle kept my hips from dropping. The surface stayed calm when my partner moved.

The Evolution’s cooling result starts at the surface. The GlacioTex pillow top on the build I tested adds an extra inch of quilted foam under a cover made with fibers designed to feel cool to the touch.

Below it, Nolah infuses its AirFoam Luxe with copper, which is designed to draw heat away, and adds a gel swirl foam below it.

The breathable AirBreath border lets air move through the sides. Three layers use zoned support, softer at the shoulders and firmest at the lumbar area, which is why my hips stayed level on a plush surface.

Pros

  • Motion Transfer (10/10): my partner’s movement stayed calm on their side
  • Value (10/10): one of three picks with a top value score
  • Edge Support (10/10): one of ten picks with a top edge score

Cons

  • Response Time (9/10): the thick foam releases a beat slower than the latex and coil picks
  • Trial Period (9/10): 120 nights, shorter than the four picks offering a full year
  • The GlacioTex cooling pillow top I tested is a paid upgrade, and it adds height to an already 15-inch bed

Nolah Evolution

With the GlacioTex pillow top, the Evolution felt cooler to the touch than the denser pillow tops I compared, and the zoned support kept my hips level under all that cushion. Just know that the cooling I noticed reflects the paid upgrade. For a side or back sleeper who loves a plush top but needs lower back support, this is the one.

Watch Our Amerisleep Organica Video Review

The Organica earned the latex spot for combining natural materials with a responsive, supportive feel. It holds a 10 out of 10 for response time, one of six picks to do so. During testing, it felt breathable, easy to move on, and supportive across positions.

Latex feels different from memory foam, and you notice it fastest when you change positions. On the Organica, the surface pushed back instead of holding a shape, so there was no waiting for the bed to release me when I rolled over.

For shoppers who are sensitive to smells, the material certifications are worth a look. The latex carries OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Rainforest Alliance, and eco-INSTITUT certifications, and the wool carries OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

The tradeoff is the edge. At 8 out of 10, the Organica ties the AS3 for the lowest edge support score on this list. The Organica fits a back or side sleeper who wants a responsive, natural-materials bed and does not want the slow sink of memory foam.

9.0 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 8 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Organica is one of six picks with a 10 out of 10 for response time, and it pairs that with natural latex, organic cotton, and wool.

During testing, the latex pushed back each time I rolled over, so I never had to climb out of a body shape. It felt supportive on both my back and my side.

Best For:

  • Combination sleepers who want easy movement
  • Shoppers who want natural materials with named certifications
  • Sleepers who dislike the slow sink of memory foam

Compare Instead:

  • PlushBeds Signature Bliss if you want certified organic latex with a 365-night trial
  • Amerisleep AS3 if a partner’s movement is your bigger concern, since it holds a 10/10 for motion transfer

The Organica in Medium feels lively and supportive. It feels more like resting on the bed than sinking into it, and the surface pushed back each time I moved. Shoppers who want more cushion can choose the Plush Box-Top build, which adds 3 inches of latex.

The Organica’s quick response comes from its latex layers. Under an organic cotton cover and 1 inch of organic wool, there are 2 inches of soft Talalay latex over 1 inch of medium Talalay latex. The soft layer takes the pressure at the shoulder, and the medium layer acts as the floor.

An 8-inch pocketed coil unit with edge support sits underneath. Latex is open-celled, and the wool helps move moisture, which fits the breathable feel I noticed.

Pros

  • Response Time (10/10): the latex pushed back each time I rolled over
  • Material certifications include OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Rainforest Alliance, and eco-INSTITUT for the latex
  • Cooling & Breathability (9/10): the latex and wool layers felt breathable through testing

Cons

  • Edge Support (8/10): tied for the lowest edge score on this list
  • Trial Period (9/10): 100 nights is the shorter end of this list
  • The latex feel will not suit sleepers who want the close hug of memory foam

Amerisleep Organica

What I liked most on the Organica was never waiting for the bed to let me go. The latex pushed back each time I rolled over, and the natural materials felt breathable. If you want natural materials with named certifications and dislike the slow sink of memory foam, this is where I would start, keeping in mind the edge is softer than on the coil-heavy picks.

Watch Our Amerisleep AS6 Black Series Video Review

The AS6 Black Series earned the cooling spot because it builds cooling into three separate layers instead of relying on the cover alone. It holds a 10 out of 10 for cooling, one of four picks to do so, and it is one of only two picks, with the AS3, that pairs that with a 10 for motion transfer.

During testing, the surface felt less heat-retentive than the traditional memory foam beds I compared. The mattress also gave me a deeply cushioned feel at the shoulders and hips while keeping my spine in line.

For shoppers who are sensitive to smells, the AS6 is one of two picks on this list, with the PlushBeds Signature Bliss, that carries GREENGUARD® Gold certification. That label is based on limits for chemical emissions into indoor air.

The tradeoffs are price and trial length. The AS6 is one of Amerisleep’s higher-priced models, and the trial is 100 nights. It fits a hot sleeper who shares a bed, especially a back or combination sleeper in the Luxury Firm build, while broad-shouldered side sleepers should look at the Plush Soft build.

9.3 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 9 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 10 Cooling & Breathability

The AS6 builds cooling into its cover, a titanium-infused foam layer, and mineral-infused bands, and it holds a 10 out of 10 for both cooling and motion transfer. During testing, the surface felt less heat-retentive than the traditional memory foam beds I compared, and motion isolation was one of its strongest results.

Best For:

  • Hot sleepers who want cooling built into several layers
  • Couples who want low motion transfer on a coil core
  • Shoppers who want GREENGUARD® Gold certified materials

Compare Instead:

  • Amerisleep AS3 if you want the same 10/10 cooling and motion scores in a single medium all-foam build at a lower price
  • Leesa Sapira Chill if you want a 10/10 cooling score with a 10/10 for response time

The AS6 gave me a deeply cushioned feel at the shoulders and hips while keeping my spine in line. Amerisleep rates the Luxury Firm build a 7 out of 10, so side sleepers with broad shoulders will likely prefer the Plush Soft build.

The AS6’s cooling result comes from three layers working together. The CryoCool™ cover is built to feel cool on contact, the TitanAir™ layer uses titanium-infused foam to spread heat, and the ArcticWave™ bands add mineral-infused cooling between them. Below that, Bio-Pur® foam and an Affinity transition layer handle pressure, and the PrecisionCoil core with CustomFlex™ zoning holds the spine level. The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, and the mattress carries GREENGUARD® Gold and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certifications.

Pros

  • Cooling & Breathability (10/10): the surface felt less heat-retentive than the traditional memory foam beds I compared
  • Motion Transfer (10/10): motion isolation was one of its strongest results in testing
  • GREENGUARD® Gold, CertiPUR-US®, and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certifications for shoppers sensitive to smells

Cons

  • Edge Support (9/10): a step behind the ten picks that hold a 10
  • Trial Period (9/10): 100 nights is the shorter end of this list
  • One of Amerisleep’s higher-priced models

Amerisleep AS6

The AS6 in Luxury Firm felt less heat-retentive than the traditional memory foam beds I compared, and it still gave me a deeply cushioned feel with my spine in line. It also carries GREENGUARD® Gold, which matters if smells bother you. I would put a hot-sleeping back or combination sleeper on this one and point broad-shouldered side sleepers to the Plush Soft build.

Watch Our Plushbeds Signature Bliss Video Review

The PlushBeds Signature Bliss earned the organic spot for the depth of its certifications. The latex is GOLS certified organic, the cotton and wool are GOTS certified organic, and the mattress carries GREENGUARD® Gold. It also holds a 10 out of 10 for response time and a 10 for edge support.

During testing, the organic latex relieved pressure while keeping the springy response many sleepers prefer over memory foam. The surface pushed back each time I changed positions, and the breathable materials kept it cooler than the dense foam beds I compared.

For odor-sensitive shoppers, it helps to know what each label covers. GOLS and GOTS confirm the organic content of the latex, cotton, and wool. GREENGUARD® Gold is the label based on chemical emissions into indoor air. This bed carries both kinds.

The tradeoff is the firmness range. PlushBeds offers a 5.5 and an 8, with nothing in between, so shoppers who want a true medium-firm may land on one side or the other. PlushBeds offers a comfort exchange if the firmness is wrong. The Signature Bliss fits a shopper who wants certified organic materials, a responsive latex feel, and a full year to decide.

9.5 Overall Score
  • 9 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 10 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Signature Bliss carries GOLS, GOTS, and GREENGUARD® Gold certifications, and it holds a 10 out of 10 for both response time and edge support. During testing, the latex pushed back each time I rolled over, and the breathable organic materials kept the surface cooler than the dense foam beds I compared.

Best For:

  • Shoppers who want certified organic materials
  • Combination sleepers who want a responsive latex feel
  • Shoppers who want 365 nights to test a new bed

Compare Instead:

  • Amerisleep Organica if you prefer the lighter feel of Talalay latex in a medium build
  • Saatva Classic if you want a 365-night trial with three firmness options instead of two

The Signature Bliss feels buoyant, with a soft latex top over a supportive coil core. On my side, the latex cushioned my shoulder without the slow sink of memory foam. On my back, the zoned coils kept my hips from dropping. The Medium build suits most side and back sleepers, while the Medium-Firm build suits back and stomach sleepers.

The Signature Bliss’s response comes from its latex. Three inches of GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex sit in the pillow top, under a GOTS certified organic cotton cover and organic wool. The wool doubles as the fire barrier. Below that, a 5-zone fabric-encased coil core supports the body, which kept my hips level on my back and held the edge firm. The natural materials leave room for air to move, which fits the cooler feel I noticed.

Pros

  • Response Time (10/10): the latex pushed back each time I rolled over
  • Edge Support (10/10): the coil core held the perimeter firm
  • GOLS, GOTS, and GREENGUARD® Gold certifications, plus a 365-night trial

Cons

  • Motion Transfer (9/10): a step behind the seven picks that hold a 10
  • Only two firmness levels, a 5.5 and an 8, with nothing in between
  • The latex feel will not suit sleepers who want the close hug of memory foam

PlushBeds Signature Bliss

The Signature Bliss pushed back each time I rolled over, and the breathable materials felt cooler than the dense foam beds I compared. Its certifications cover both organic content and indoor emissions, which few beds on this list can say. I would recommend it to a shopper who wants certified organic materials and a full year to decide, as long as a 5.5 or an 8 fits your firmness preference.

Watch Our Westin Heavenly Bed Review

The Westin Heavenly Bed is the mattress Westin designed for its hotels, sold for home use. It holds a 10 out of 10 for both response time and edge support, and it earned the hotel spot for delivering that classic pillow-top-on-coils feel at home.

For a migraine shopper, the delivery stood out first. The bed arrived at full size with white-glove setup, not compressed in a box, so I did not have to wait out an off-gassing or expansion period. If new-product smells are one of your triggers, that is a practical advantage.

During testing, the pillow top gave an immediate plush feel without the slow recovery I sometimes get from thick foam. When I dropped weights on the surface, it recovered almost instantly, and changing positions overnight took no effort. I sat and lay along the full perimeter and never felt a roll-off sensation.

After 30 minutes in one position, I detected only a small temperature rise, and when I moved, the warm spot returned to room temperature in about three to four minutes, faster than the all-foam beds I have tested.

The big tradeoff is the purchase terms. The Heavenly Bed cannot be returned, there is a shipping fee, it needs a box spring, and it must be rotated every three to six months to keep the warranty valid. Motion transfer and cooling each scored a 9. It fits a side or combination sleeper who has tried the bed at a Westin, liked it, and does not need a trial to decide.

7.7 Overall Score
  • 8 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 0 Trial Period
  • 10 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Heavenly Bed holds a 10 out of 10 for response time and edge support, and it was the only bed on this list delivered to me at full size with no off-gassing or expansion period. During partner testing, my partner described my movements on the far side as muffled rather than sharp, including getting into bed late and reaching for a phone on the nightstand.

Best For:

  • Side and combination sleepers who want a pillow top on responsive coils
  • Shoppers sensitive to smells who want to skip a boxed mattress’s expansion period
  • Shoppers who have tested the bed at a Westin hotel

Compare Instead:

  • Saatva Classic if you want a pillow top on coils with a 365-night trial and three firmness levels
  • Leesa Sapira Chill if you want a 10/10 for both cooling and response time with a 120-night trial

The Heavenly Bed feels medium, with a clear plush first impression from the tufted pillow top. The coils push back underneath, so I never sank in the way I do on soft all-foam beds. On my side, my shoulders sank in enough to keep my spine in line. On my back, I could slide my hand under my lower back and feel a small natural gap, a sign the middle was not over-compressing. On my stomach, my hips sank a little more than they do on very firm beds, so strict stomach sleepers may want something firmer.

The Heavenly Bed’s fast response comes from its individually wrapped coils, which push back the moment you shift and move on their own, which also limits motion across the bed. The spacing between coils leaves channels for air to move, which fits the quick heat recovery I measured. Gel-infused foam layers sit above the coils for pressure relief, and the Fenice pillow top adds the plush, tufted surface. A dense base layer anchors the coil unit, which is part of why the edge stayed so stable. Silver fibers are woven in to help keep the mattress fresh.

Pros

  • Response Time (10/10): weights dropped on the surface recovered almost instantly
  • Edge Support (10/10): I sat and lay along the full perimeter with no roll-off sensation
  • Arrived at full size with white-glove setup, with no off-gassing or expansion period to wait out

Cons

  • No sleep trial: the mattress cannot be returned
  • Delivery fee
  • The bed needs a box spring
  • One medium feel only, and the warranty requires rotation every three to six months

Westin Heavenly Bed

The Heavenly Bed arrived at full size with white-glove setup, so I never had to wait out an off-gassing or expansion period. The coils responded instantly when I moved, and the edge stayed stable whether I sat or lay on it. Because it cannot be returned, I only recommend it to a side or combination sleeper who has already tried it at a Westin and liked it.

The AS5 Hybrid is the only pick in this guide sold solely in a soft 3 out of 10 feel, and that is the reason it is here. During testing, it gave me a plush, body-contouring feel without losing support. My shoulders and hips sank in on my side, but my spine stayed in line.

Soft beds often run warm because more of your body is in contact with the surface. The AS5 holds a 10 out of 10 for cooling, one of four picks to do so. It also absorbed movement well while staying responsive enough for position changes, which earned a 9 for motion transfer.

The tradeoffs follow from the softness. At 8 out of 10, it holds the lowest response time score in this guide, because a deep comfort layer takes longer to release. Stomach sleepers will find the middle sinks further than it should.

The AS5 Hybrid fits a side sleeper who wants a truly plush surface and runs warm. It does not fit a stomach sleeper.

8.8 Overall Score
  • 8 Value
  • 9 Edge Support
  • 9 Trial Period
  • 8 Response Time
  • 9 Motion Transfer
  • 10 Cooling & Breathability

The AS5 Hybrid is the only pick on this list built solely as a soft bed, and it pairs that softness with a 10 out of 10 for cooling. During testing, my shoulders and hips sank in on my side while the support underneath kept my spine in line. The surface absorbed movement while staying responsive enough to change positions.

Best For:

  • Side sleepers who want a plush surface
  • Hot sleepers who like soft beds
  • Couples who want a soft, quiet surface

Compare Instead:

  • Helix Midnight Luxe if you want a medium side-sleeping feel with a 10/10 edge
  • Amerisleep AS3 if you want a medium feel with a 10/10 for motion transfer

The AS5 Hybrid feels plush from the first touch, and at 3 out of 10 it matches the softest builds on this list. My shoulders and hips sank in on my side, but the support underneath kept my spine in line. At 3 out of 10, it is too soft for most stomach sleepers.

The AS5’s softness comes from its thick Bio-Pur® comfort layer, which has an open-cell structure that lets air move, fitting the cool surface I noticed.

Below it, the Active Flex layer pushes back where a second memory foam layer would keep compressing, which is why the deep cushion still ends somewhere.

Pocketed coils add bounce, and double-density coils along the sides support the edge. The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Pros

  • Cooling & Breathability (10/10): one of four picks with a top cooling score
  • A soft 3 out of 10 surface, with support underneath that kept my spine straight on my side
  • Motion Transfer (9/10): absorbed movement while staying responsive enough for position changes

Cons

  • Response Time (8/10): the lowest response score in this guide, since the deep comfort layer takes longer to release
  • Not suited to stomach sleepers, because the middle sinks too far
  • Value (8/10): a step behind the three picks that hold a 10

Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid

The AS5 is the only bed in this guide made in a soft feel alone. My shoulders and hips sank in while the support underneath kept my spine in line, and it stayed cool for such a plush surface. I would hand it to a side sleeper who wants true softness and runs warm, but not to a stomach sleeper.

Watch Our Nest Bedding Sparrow Video Review

The Nest Bedding Sparrow earned the couples spot because it pairs a 10 out of 10 for motion transfer with a 365-night trial and three firmness levels. It is also sold in split California King halves, which lets two people with different preferences choose different builds.

During testing, the Sparrow relieved pressure at my shoulder while keeping my spine in line, which suits side sleepers who share a bed. When my partner moved, there was very little motion transfer, and it was easy to change positions through the night.

It also holds a 10 for edge support, so couples can use the full width of the bed without the sides giving way.

The tradeoff is value. At 8 out of 10, it sits two points below the three picks with a top value score. The Sparrow fits a couple where one person moves at night, or a pair who want to test a bed together over a full year.

9.3 Overall Score
  • 8 Value
  • 10 Edge Support
  • 10 Trial Period
  • 9 Response Time
  • 10 Motion Transfer
  • 9 Cooling & Breathability

The Sparrow holds a 10 out of 10 for motion transfer, edge support, and trial period, and it comes in three firmness levels. During testing, very little motion reached my side when my partner moved, and my shoulder had room to settle on my side while my spine stayed straight.

Best For:

  • Couples where one partner moves at night
  • Couples who want different firmness levels in a split California King
  • Side sleepers who share a bed

Compare Instead:

  • FORM Prime if you want the same 10s for motion, edge, and trial in a gel grid build
  • Amerisleep AS3 if you want a 10/10 for both motion transfer and cooling

The Sparrow feels balanced, with a quilted gel memory foam top over a responsive foam layer and pocketed coils. On my side, my shoulder settled in while my waist stayed up. The surface bounced back fast enough that changing positions felt easy. Plush and Firm builds are available for sleepers who want to move further in either direction.

The Sparrow’s motion result comes from its 5 inches of foam above the coils, which absorb movement before it reaches the other side of the bed. The top inch is a quilted THERMIC® phase change cover over 4 lb. gel memory foam. THERMIC® is designed to absorb heat as temperature rises and release it as the surface cools. Below that, 3 inches of Energex™ foam gives pressure relief with a faster recovery than traditional memory foam, which fits how easily I changed positions. A 1-inch SmartFlow transition foam leads into an 8-inch unit of individually wrapped coils with reinforced edges, which explains the 10 out of 10 edge score. A 1-inch base foam sits at the bottom.

Pros

  • Motion Transfer (10/10): very little motion reached my side when my partner moved
  • Trial Period (10/10): 365 nights to test the bed together
  • Edge Support (10/10): the reinforced perimeter makes the full width usable

Cons

  • Value (8/10): two points below the three picks with a top value score
  • Cooling & Breathability (9/10): a step behind the four picks that hold a 10
  • Response Time (9/10): a step behind the six picks that hold a 10

Nest Bedding Sparrow

On the Sparrow, very little of my partner’s movement reached my side, and my shoulder had room to settle while my spine stayed straight. With three firmness levels and a split California King option, it gives couples real room to disagree. It is the bed I would suggest to a couple where one person moves at night.

Migraines and Sleep: What the Research Says

Migraine is common, and it is more than a bad headache. About 12% of Americans have migraines, and women are about three times more likely than men to have them, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 1 Verified Source U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Part of America’s Department of Health and Human Services and dedicated to providing accurate health information. See the source . Without treatment, an attack can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours.

Sleep and migraine affect each other in both directions. A 2021 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences describes how poor sleep can set off an attack, while sleep often helps end one 2 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . People with migraine are also more likely to have sleep disorders than the general population, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 3 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source .

Why So Many Migraines Start in the Morning

Migraines are more common in the morning, and people often wake up with them, according to MedlinePlus 4 Verified Source Medline Plus Online resource offered by the National Library of Medicine and part of the National Institutes of Health. See the source . A review in the journal Headache reported that two-thirds of people with migraine say headaches at least sometimes wake them from sleep 5 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . The same review found that early morning attacks become more common with age, rising from 16% of people in their twenties to 58% of people over 60.

Older sleepers often have other nighttime concerns to weigh alongside migraine, including bone health. My guide to the best mattress for osteoporosis covers support and firmness for that concern separately.

Waking Up Often May Matter More Than Sleeping Less

That same review found that nights before sleep-related attacks had more awakenings, but not clearly less total sleep. It also described a study in healthy volunteers in which broken-up sleep, not shorter sleep, weakened the body’s natural ability to block pain.

That finding is why I weighted cooling and motion transfer most heavily in this guide. A surface that holds heat and a partner whose movement reaches your side are two common reasons people wake up at night, and they are two things a mattress directly controls.

Other studies point the same way. In a study of 103 adults with migraine, 66% reported poor sleep quality, and sleep scores got worse as attacks became more frequent 6 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . Because the study measured both at one point in time, it cannot show which problem causes the other. In animal research at the University of Arizona Health Sciences, disrupted sleep made migraine-like pain more likely in mice, while the pain itself did not disrupt their sleep.

Common Triggers Your Bedroom Can Influence

A clinical review from StatPearls lists how often people report common migraine triggers. Changes in sleep, either too much or too little, were reported by about half 7 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . Strong odors were reported by 40%, neck pain and light exposure by 38% each, and heat by 30%.

A mattress cannot change most triggers. It can influence three of them: how much heat builds up under you, how your neck and spine are positioned for the night, and, with a new bed, how the room smells for the first few weeks. A 2022 review in Open Medicine lists holding the neck in one fixed position for a long time among the physical factors linked to migraine attacks, which is why neck position gets its own section below 8 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source .

Sleep Habits Researchers Recommend

Going to bed at the same time each night is one of the healthier sleep habits listed by the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia 9 Verified Source Medline Plus Online resource offered by the National Library of Medicine and part of the National Institutes of Health. See the source . The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) notes that daytime naps can reduce deep sleep at night and can cause headaches in some adults 10 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source .

The Open Medicine review also summarizes a simple five-step sleep routine studied in people with migraine: a set bedtime that allows eight hours in bed, no TV, reading, or music in bed, a calming visualization to fall asleep, dinner at least four hours before bed with fewer fluids in the last two hours, and no daytime naps.

Researchers are also testing sleep-focused therapy. A 2026 systematic review in the European Journal of Neurology found that digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) reduced headache days in the studies it covered, while results for standard CBT-I were mixed 11 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source 12 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source .

A larger follow-up trial funded by Brain Research UK found that digital CBT-I improved insomnia faster than sleep education alone, but the difference had faded by six months, and migraine symptoms did not differ between the groups. The takeaway is that sleep is worth working on with your doctor, and no single change is a fix.

Sleep Apnea and Morning Headaches

Morning headaches can have more than one cause, and sleep apnea is one of them. However, the review in Headache found that population studies show similar rates of sleep apnea in people with and without migraine. If you snore, wake up unrefreshed, or think you might have sleep apnea, MedlinePlus Magazine recommends talking to your doctor 13 Verified Source Medline Plus Online resource offered by the National Library of Medicine and part of the National Institutes of Health. See the source . A mattress does not treat sleep apnea. If it is part of your picture, my guide to the best mattress for sleep apnea covers the features that matter.

What to Look For in a Mattress for Migraines

A Surface That Doesn’t Trap Heat

Heat was reported as a trigger by about 30% of people in the StatPearls review, so a surface that stays cooler under you is worth prioritizing. Look for open-cell or infused foams, such as gel, graphite, copper, or titanium, a cover built to feel cool on contact, and coil cores that let air move. Latex also tends to run cooler than traditional memory foam. On this list, the AS3, Leesa Sapira Chill, AS6 Black Series, and AS5 Hybrid scored a 10 for cooling.

Low Motion Transfer

If you share a bed, a partner’s movement can wake you. Memory foam and thick foam comfort layers absorb movement before it spreads. Pocketed coils move on their own, so they limit motion better than connected coils. Seven picks on this list scored a 10 for motion transfer.

A Neutral Neck and Spine

The goal in any position is a straight line from your head to your hips. Use your main sleep position as a starting point:

Sleep PositionStarting FirmnessWhat to Check
Side3 to 6 out of 10Your shoulder sinks in further than your waist
Back5 to 7 out of 10Your hips stay level with your shoulders, with no gap under your lower back
Stomach6 to 8 out of 10Your middle stays level instead of sagging
Combination5 to 6 out of 10The surface lets you roll over without effort

Body weight changes the answer. Sleepers under about 130 pounds often do better one or two points softer, and sleepers over about 230 pounds often do better one or two points firmer, with a thicker comfort layer above the coils.

Readers who deal with poor circulation as well can compare picks in my mattress for poor circulation guide.

Neck and spine position also matters for other conditions. My best mattress for ankylosing spondylitis guide covers that for a stiffer, less flexible spine.

Certifications If You Are Sensitive to Smells

Strong odors were reported as a trigger by 40% of people in the StatPearls review, and the NINDS lists strong smells among common triggers. If new-product smells bother you, check which certifications a mattress carries and what each one covers:

  • CertiPUR-US®: tests foam for certain chemicals and for low VOC emissions
  • GREENGUARD® Gold: sets limits on chemical emissions into indoor air
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: tests materials for a list of harmful substances
  • GOLS and GOTS: confirm organic content in latex, cotton, and wool, not emissions
  • eco-INSTITUT: tests latex for harmful substances and emissions

On this list, the AS6 Black Series and PlushBeds Signature Bliss carry GREENGUARD® Gold. Beds delivered at full size, like the Westin Heavenly Bed, also skip the expansion period of a boxed mattress. Whatever you buy, unbox it in a well-ventilated room if you can.

A Trial Long Enough to Learn Your Pattern

Migraine patterns can take weeks to show up, so a short trial may not tell you much. The NINDS recommends a headache journal that includes the quality and length of the previous night’s sleep. Keeping one during a mattress trial gives you real notes to decide on. The FORM Prime, Saatva Classic, PlushBeds Signature Bliss, and Nest Bedding Sparrow all offer 365 nights. The Westin Heavenly Bed offers no trial.

Pair Your Mattress With the Right Pillow

Your pillow sets your neck angle for the whole night, so it matters as much as the mattress for neck position. The right loft keeps your head in line with your spine instead of tilted up or dropped down.

Side sleepers need the most loft, since the gap between the shoulder and the head is widest. Back sleepers need a medium loft that supports the curve of the neck. Stomach sleepers need a very thin pillow, or none, to keep the neck from bending back. If your pillow has gone flat or lumpy, replace it. My guide to the best cooling pillows covers picks that pair well with the mattresses here.

Set Up Your Bedroom

Light was reported as a trigger by 38% of people in the StatPearls review, so make the room as dark as you can with blackout curtains or a soft sleep mask. Keep the room cool and quiet, and use a fan or white noise if outside sounds wake you.

The University of Arizona researchers also recommend keeping phones and other devices out of the bedroom. During an attack, the NINDS suggests resting in a quiet, dark room with a cool cloth or ice pack on your forehead.

When to See a Doctor About Headaches

A mattress is not a treatment, and some headaches need medical care. The NINDS advises seeing a doctor right away for a sudden, severe headache, a headache with fever or a stiff neck, or a headache with confusion, weakness, double vision, or numbness. It also recommends a visit if you have two or more headaches a week, or if headaches get worse over days or weeks.

A clinical review from StatPearls lists headaches that wake you from sleep or are worse in the morning among the signs that call for a closer look 14 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . MedlinePlus also advises contacting your doctor if your headaches are more severe when you lie down 15 Verified Source Medline Plus Online resource offered by the National Library of Medicine and part of the National Institutes of Health. See the source .

Not every nighttime headache is a migraine. A rare condition called hypnic headache wakes people at about the same time each night and usually starts after age 50 16 Verified Source National Library of Medicine (NIH) World’s largest medical library, making biomedical data and information more accessible. See the source . Your doctor can help sort out which type you have.

“If headaches are accompanied by recurring neck pain, stiffness, limited motion, or symptoms that reliably change with neck position or movement, that’s information worth sharing with your healthcare provider,” says Dr. Miller. “A physical therapist can assess whether there is a musculoskeletal component contributing to the overall picture and address things like cervical mobility, strength, movement, and positioning when appropriate.”

“But new, severe, or changing headaches—especially with neurological symptoms—need medical evaluation rather than assuming they’re coming from the neck.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mattress for migraines?

No mattress treats migraines, so the best choice is the one that gives you the best conditions for steady sleep. After testing more than 50 mattresses, I named the Amerisleep AS3 the top pick. It scored a 10 out of 10 for both cooling and motion transfer and kept my spine in line on my back and side. The Zoma Boost and Nolah Evolution are also strong picks.

Can a mattress cause migraines?

A mattress is not a known cause of migraine. Still, a bed that runs hot, lets a partner’s movement wake you, or leaves your neck at an awkward angle can make it harder to sleep well. If your headaches started or changed after a new bed, talk to your doctor and use your trial period to test the difference.

Why do I wake up with a headache?

Morning headaches can have many causes, including migraine, poor sleep, a pillow that is too high or too flat, and sleep apnea. If you wake up with headaches often, keep a journal of your sleep and symptoms and share it with your doctor.

What firmness is best for migraines?

The best firmness depends on how you sleep. Side sleepers usually do best between 3 and 6 out of 10, back sleepers between 5 and 7, and stomach sleepers between 6 and 8. The goal is a straight line from your head to your hips.

What is the best sleeping position for migraines?

There is no single best position. Back and side sleeping make it easier to keep your neck in line with your spine, as long as your pillow is the right height. Stomach sleeping turns your neck to one side all night, so a very thin pillow helps if you sleep that way.

Can a new mattress smell trigger a migraine?

Strong smells are a common migraine trigger. If you are sensitive to odors, look for certifications based on emissions, like GREENGUARD® Gold or CertiPUR-US®, and unbox your new mattress in a well-ventilated room.

Is memory foam or latex better for migraines?

Neither is better for everyone. Memory foam absorbs a partner’s movement well and contours closely. Latex feels more responsive and usually runs cooler than traditional memory foam. Choose based on whether heat or a partner’s movement bothers you more.

Does an adjustable bed help with migraines?

An adjustable base changes the angle you sleep at, and some people find a slightly raised head more comfortable. It is not a treatment. If your headaches get worse when you lie down, talk to your doctor before buying one.

How long should I test a new mattress?

Give it at least 30 nights before judging, and use as much of the trial as you can. Migraine patterns can take weeks to show up, so a 365-night trial gives you the most room to decide.

Find the Right Mattress for Your Migraine Triggers

Sleep and migraine affect each other in both directions, and that is why your bed is worth a closer look. A mattress cannot treat migraine, but it can shape how much heat builds up under you, whether a partner’s movement reaches you, and how your neck and spine rest through the night.

Start with the trigger that matters most to you. If heat wakes you, look at the picks with a 10 for cooling. If a partner’s movement wakes you, look at the picks with a 10 for motion transfer. If smells bother you, check the certifications. Then choose the firmness that fits your sleep position, and use the trial to keep notes.

Most of all, treat your mattress as one part of a bigger plan. If migraines affect your life, talk to your doctor, and bring your sleep notes with you.
