Sleep and Dreams in Movies

The topic of sleep and dreams have been an important part of movie making for over 50 years, which is almost as long a Gary Busey has been nuts.

Can’t sleep and want to watch a few flicks? Try some from the list below.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – Tom Hank’s character Sam has bouts of insomnia and searching for true love with Annie (Meg Ryan).

Waking Life (2001) – Discover the purpose of the universe as a man meets people in his dreams.

Insomnia (2002) -  A murder investigation in Alaska has Al Pacino’s character suffering from insomnia due to the perpetual daylight.

Inception (2010) – A crime thriller takes place inside the mind of a sleeping man. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

Somewhere in Dreamland (1936) – Dreams of all the treat they could desire fill the heads of a young boy and girl in this short animated film.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) – Dorothy is not in Kansa anymore in this dream land of imagination.

Dreamscape (1984) – The government wants to use a man who can enter another person’s dreams.

Paprika (2006) – A Japanese anime film where a machine can access the minds of sleeping patients.

Brazil (1985) – Daydreams of love from a lowly government worker.

Sleeper (1973) – A Woody Allen movie where his character is thawed out after a 200 year frozen sleep to help overthrow a police state.

Fight Club (1999) – A man (Ed Norton) seeks out support groups to help him with his insomnia.

Chasing Sleep (2000) – When a college professor wakes, he finds that his wife is missing.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) – People who fall asleep are replaced by clones grown in plant pods.

Vanilla Sky ( 2001) – Manipulate your dreams is you dare.

Awakenings (1990) – A young doctor works with comatose patients who are trapped in their bodies.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – People get killed in their dreams by Freddy Frueger in this instalment and way too many more.

Light Sleeper (1992) – A drug dealer with insomnia ends with tragic events.

The Big Sleep (1946) – Private investigator Philip Marlow investigate a blackmail in the seedy underworld.

Sleeping Beauty (1959) – An animated film by Walt Disney.

Ink (2009) – Two forces battle over a child’s soul giving pleasant dreams and horrible nightmares.

Shutter Island (2010) – Dream sequences haunt a US marshal played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Sleepers (1996) – Four boys exact revenge against a tormentor from a boys detention center.

Dead Awake (2001) – While walking the streets an insomniac’s night gets far worse.

Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane investigates a trio of decapitations.

The Science of Sleep (2006) – Science, vivid dreams and love all come together.

Sleep (1963) – Andy Warhol’s first movie consisting of 5 ½ hours of watching his friend John Giorno sleep.

The Lathe of Heaven (1979) – A doctor uses prescription medications to keep himself from dreaming as his dreams can come into being.
